Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) traveled to the Mexico-Texas border this week to visit with commonwealth National Guard troops and stood firm on his call for President Joe Biden to tighten control of illegal crossings, especially by drug cartels.

There to visit troops he dispatched to help Texas take up the slack where there are not enough federal forces, Youngkin revealed that drugs pouring into the United States are killing Virginians.

“An open border is enabling the destruction of lives by the blight of illicit drugs and human trafficking. With an average of five Virginians dying a day from fentanyl overdoses, we have to go to work at the source,” the governor said.

His trip was a busy one as he met with many involved in Operation Lone Star, a multistate effort to combat the crisis at the southern border.

He met with 15 Virginia National Guard and five Texas National Guard members and heard about what they have witnessed on the border. He delivered lunches, handed out challenge coins, heard about the hardship of being away from home, and “even recruited one guard member to his basketball team,” an official said.

Youngkin has taken some heat in the commonwealth for helping Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R-TX) border effort, but said he felt compelled to act and dispatch 100 troops due to the impact illegal immigration has had on Virginia.

He started at Eagle Pass and Shelby Park, Texas, and later went to Observation Point 1407. According to his office, “Gov. Youngkin had the opportunity to see the concertina wire border firsthand while receiving an operational overview from several Texas and Virginia National Guard members on how they counter illegal immigration, the illegal drug trade, and human trafficking on a daily basis. Guard members again reemphasized the need of more federal resources rather than leaving it up to Texas and individual states.”
