Yuma firefighters rappel into canal to rescue fallen migrant

YUMA, Ariz. An illegal immigrant trying to escape Border Patrol agents fell 35 feet to the bottom of a nearly dry concrete-lined canal and had to be rescued.

A team of Yuma firefighters rappelled to the bottom of the All-American Canal across the Arizona-California border to lift the man, identified as a Mexican citizen, to safety.

He suffered a broken leg and other injuries as he fled Border Patrol agents Monday night.

The man landed on the concrete bottom of the spillway, cushioned only by about five inches of water.

He was among 20 illegal migrants stopped by Border Patrol agents west of Yuma. They were told to sit on the road, but instead the man ran and fell into the canal.

The injured man is hospitalized, and the 19 others were sent back to Mexico.
