Chicago has created “ICE-free zones” on city property and is encouraging private businesses to join, designating locations where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cannot operate as staging grounds for raids. These zones include city facilities like schools, libraries, and parks, and the policy aims to limit ICE enforcement actions on these public and some private spaces without a warrant. An executive order by Mayor Brandon Johnson has designated city-owned property as ICE-free zones. Examples include school parking lots, libraries, and parks, where ICE cannot use the space for activities like staging raids or setting up checkpoints.
