In this 19 May 2026 video, host Cash Jordan talks about how Mexican cartels thought they had a pipeline into America, but it is now closed.
The U.S. government, alongside Mexican authorities, has heavily militarized and fortified the border, resulting in a steep drop in illegal border crossings to around 600 or fewer encounters per day. The multi-agency enforcement push has fundamentally altered cartel operations. Following an executive order designating major Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, U.S. and Mexican law enforcement have aggressively dismantled the illicit networks the organizations depended on. The crackdown has specifically targeted the “pipeline” at multiple levels.
Federal and local law enforcement have ramped up detection and shutdowns of cross-border smuggling tunnels. For example, in 2025, Border Patrol agents exposed a massive, sophisticated 3,000-foot narcotics smuggling tunnel stretching from Tijuana, Mexico, to a warehouse in San Diego, California.
Cartel use of drones for surveillance and smuggling has been countered by new military tactics. U.S. defense officials have actively disabled cartel drones breaching American airspace. This prompted the temporary closure of airspace over El Paso, Texas, while the Pentagon tested anti-drone laser technology to disrupt cartel air operations.
Mexican authorities raided secret tunnels used to steal crude oil directly from state-owned company PEMEX, dealing a heavy blow to the multi-billion-dollar “huachicol” black market used to fund cartel operations.
The U.S. has secured high-level arrests, including detaining former Mexican security officials and politicians who facilitated cross-border pipelines and cartel operations
Because the border crackdown directly impacts bottom lines, cartels are facing severe supply chain disruptions, forcing them into increasingly desperate measures.
