Between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants attempted to cross from Morocco into the Spanish North African exclave of Ceuta over a 48-hour period, leading to a humanitarian crisis and at least 67 deaths from drownings and stampedes. Viral social media headlines claimed a judge abolished the border, allowing tens of thousands to flood Spain legally but according to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, human trafficking networks intentionally distorted a narrow, technical Spanish Supreme Court decision regarding migrant returns. Traffickers falsely told migrants that the court had ruled anyone arriving by sea could no longer be deported. The Supreme Court ruling did not dismantle borders or end deportations; it was a highly specific legal decision that trafficking networks deliberately weaponized to incentivize the surge

Within 24 hours of the surge, Spanish military and security forces, cooperating closely with Moroccan authorities, returned the vast majority of the migrants back to Morocco. Many also returned voluntarily after finding no food or shelter in the overwhelmed territory. To prevent further sea crossings, Spain has already installed a new 500-meter-long (1,600-foot) floating sea barrier in the waters surrounding Ceuta. The sudden influx triggered immediate security responses across Europe, with neighboring countries like France and Italy reinforcing border checks to prevent migrants from moving deeper into continental Europe.
