City Mulls Working With Feds On Immigrant Crackdown
SAN DIEGO -- Illegal immigration is once again at the center of controversy in the North County city of Escondido.
This time, the debate centers on a plan for police and federal agents to work together to crack down on illegal immigrants who commit crimes.
The idea will be taken up by the Escondido City Council on Wednesday.
Critics said that plan unfairly targets illegal immigrants; supporters, however, maintain that the practice would make Escondido safer.
Immigration has a history of dividing the city of Escondido. Councilman Sam Abed told NBC 7/39 that the plan is for everybody's good.
"Our goal is to reduce the crime in Escondido," Abed said.
Under the proposal, federal agents would work with local officers at checkpoints to crack down on crimes as minor as driving without insurance.
"We cannot prosecute someone without a driver's license, without Social Security, without any papers, and we cannot let loose in our community," said Abed. "They need to be turned over to the federal government for prosecution."
Critics of the plan claim that deporting someone for minor crimes goes too far.
"There's going be a police department doing the work of the federal government, which they're not trained to do -- and there could be possible racial profiling at these checkpoints," said Consuelo Martinez, of the Escondido Human Rights Committee.
Local residents are split on the issue as well.
"A lot of police, I've heard, when they stop someone who's an illegal, if they don't have ID, they just let them go," said Escondido resident Ryan Belong. "If they're here illegally, they shouldn't be here."
"Anytime you set out to get something, you're going to infringe on people who are abiding by the law," said Joe Magaña, another local resident.
Abiding by the law is exactly what Abed said he is after, and that he wants to make sure everyone is included.
"You have to follow the law if you want to live in this city, period," said Abed.
The idea was first discussed in Escondido in January. On Wednesday, a revised proposal will be presented to the City Council by the police chief, who was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.
