AOL has a new "Latino" section and this poll can only be found there. As such it would be extremely biased so I posted it here so that "we" could have an influence. I'll fight a skirmish where-ever I find one.

U.S.: Government to reward companies that control immigration status

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday it will give its "seal of approval" to firms that voluntarily agree to use a mail program to check the immigration status of their workers.

Secretary Janet Napolitano said the public should know which companies apply the law. The problem is that the program, called E-Verify, is still under development, and the law does not require employers to use it, but to use a system of paper forms.

In addition, some firms that use E-Verify have hired undocumented workers who presented papers stolen, forged or borrowed.

Some 169,000 of 7 million U.S. employers already use E-Verify. Napolitano made the announcement at a meeting of workers on the implementation of immigration laws.

The E-Verify program, whose name can be translated as electronic check, "disclose to consumers what the firms that are striving to apply the law and are determined to protect employment opportunities," said Napolitano.

The seal presented by the officer says "I E-Verify" (I check electronically) in large letters on an American flag waving. Below, in smaller letters, the stamp includes the legend "this company uses E-Verify in its recruitment processes in order to have legal workforce."

Although the department has tried to reduce the rate of errors made by E-Verify, the program usually indicated as undocumented workers who are legally in the country. It can not distinguish the fake documents.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched a similar program in 2007, called ICE Image, but the employer was obliged to submit to audit the forms I-9 immigration status of workers.

Congress gave the department $ 137 million to use E-Verify for three years. Not many employers reported more could participate. It rejected a proposal to return the program permanent, but it is likely to recur in the immigration bill from the Democrats.
