Participants in the annual straw poll conducted by the League of Women Voters at the Hamilton County Fair found strong support for offshore drilling and tougher penalties for companies that knowingly hire those who have not complied with this nation's immigration laws.

A resounding 93 percent of of poll-takers said there should be stiffer penalties and stricter enforcement against the employers who knowingly participate in the hiring of undocumented foreign workers.

Support was also very strong for Congress to follow the action of President Bush and lift the ban on offshore drilling along the U.S. coastline. Here a whopping 78 percent agreed with the call to open up more U.S. drilling opportunities.

Answers were much closer on the remaining four answers in the poll.

On the question of whether or not poll-takers would be willing to help support the cost of a permanent collection facility for hazardous waste at the Hamilton County Landfill, 66 percent agreed, while 44 percent said no.

Sixty-four percent poll-takers supported a national health care program that could be purchased as an alternative to current health insurance plans.

Perhaps surprisingly, a small majority was willing to pay more at the pump to help fund the cost of road maintenance and repair, with 62 percent saying yes.

And finally, 53 percent favored doubling the term of state representatives from two years to four years and lengthening the term of state senators from four years to six years.
