More than two-thirds of North Carolina residents support oil drilling off the state's coast, according to a poll conducted by Elon University.
Some 69 percent of respondents in the study, conducted from Sept. 15 through Sept. 18, said they support drilling. Another 26 percent of people were opposed.
The study also showed that just under half of poll respondents, 43 percent, said they believed offshore drilling would bring down gas prices in five years or fewer.
Some analysts believe that a U.S. commitment to drilling would bring down prices in the short term, though most analysts and an Energy Information Administration report from 2007 assert that any such impact would be small and would take at least 10 years to kick in.
But prices at the pump are high, and North Carolinians think drilling could help alleviate that, says Elon Poll director Hunter Bacot.
