Over half of US wants end to citizenship for illegal kids

    WASHINGTON, D.C.

Over half of Americans oppose giving automatic citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born on US soil, which is a constitutional right, a Quinnipiac University poll said.

With 51 percent against the practice, 45 percent said they remained in favor of granting birthright citizenship according to the survey of 1,905 adults that took place August 13-September 7.

President Barack Obama has vowed to find a solution to more than 11 million illegal aliens living in the country, as amnesty proposals in Congress face fierce opposition, chiefly from Republicans, and states like Arizona issue hardline policies of their own.

The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in Connecticut, which is most active in the months prior to US elections such as the upcoming November legislative polls, said the opinions for and against tended to gather along party lines.

For instance, Democratic electors were 62 percent in favor of granting citizenship to children of illegal aliens.

By contrast, 67 percent of Republican electors were against birthright citizenship for US-born children of illegal immigrants.

Independent voters were 51 percent against and 42 percent in favor of the constitutional right.

Democratic lawmakers say immigration reform should provide illegal aliens a path to US residency and citizenship after paying a fine, while Republicans have recently begun to push for amending the constitution to drop birthright citizenship altogether.

"Support for ending 'birthright citizenship' is not overwhelming, and falls along predictable political lines," said Polling Institute assistant director Peter Brown.

On other matters, the poll, which has a 2.3 margin of error, found that 51 percent of Americans do not believe President Obama shares their values, against 46 percent who believe he does.

And 38 percent see Islam in a favorable light, against 40 percent who do not Published by HT Syndication with permission from Right Vision News.
