IN: Poll: Most favor penalties for hiring illegals
Poll: Most favor penalties for hiring illegals

INDIANAPOLIS - A new statewide poll found overwhelming support for stricter penalties on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
The WISH-TV Indiana Poll released Wednesday night found 71 percent favored such penalties, while 19 percent opposed them and 10 percent were unsure.
The Republican-ruled Indiana Senate and Democrat-led House each passed different versions of bills earlier this year that would have punished employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, but they could not reach compromise on a final version.
The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
The poll was a telephone survey of 800 likely voters conducted by Maryland-based Research 2000 from Sept. 29-Oct. 3.

Poll: Should illegal immigrants be deported?
Posted: Oct 15, 2008 05:48 PM PDT
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The latest WISH-TV Indiana poll examined the issue of illegal immigrants.
The tough questions are: Should employers be punished for knowingly hiring illegals or should they be deported?
One choice in the poll: Illegals should be allowed to stay if they have worked here for six years after paying fines, passing background checks, paying back taxes and learning English.
Under those circumstances, only about 25% of the people surveyed would deport the immigrants. But, 52% said they should be allowed to stay.
A gender breakdown shows more men about a third of them would be inclined to deport illegals. But, in both cases men and women, the majority would allow them to stay.
The poll also reveals party differences. Democrats would be more willing to allow the immigrants to stay. But a third of Republicans said they should go.
In another question: Do you favor or oppose stricter penalties on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants?
Seventy one percent of all respondents support tougher penalties. Women are more likely than men by a few points to support punishment.
And, 81% of the Democrats surveyed said they favor tougher penalties. Sixty two percent of Republicans said they did.
