    NC House Approves Bill To Deport Jailed Illegal Immigrants Before Sentences Are Up

    RALEIGH, N.C. -- Some illegal immigrants currently in North Carolina jails may get deported soon.

    The House voted 103-2 on Monday to approve a plan which would allow the Department of Correction to release some illegal immigrants from prison early so they could be deported. The plan needs Easley's signature before it becomes law.

    Only illegal immigrants convicted of nonviolent crimes would qualify. They would have to serve more than half of their sentences before they could be deported.

    Any prisoners who are released early and then found in the country would be sent back to prison to complete their sentences.

    The measure could free up more than 250 prison beds each year.

    The bill was unanimously approved by the Senate last month.
