The more the public learns about the stimulus plan working its way through Congress, the less it likes it, according to a new poll.

Only 42 percent of Americans now think the bill is a good idea, according to Rasmussen Reports, which had found 45 percent approval last week. Opponents have increased from 34 percent to 39 percent.

About 19 percent of voters haven’t made up their minds yet whether the plan is a good idea, according to Rasmussen, which surveyed 1,000 likely voters Jan. 27-28.

The survey suggests that the plan would be slightly more popular if it offered tax cuts and no spending. About 43 percent of respondents thought that was a good idea, compared with 39 percent who disagreed.

One of the most interesting questions: What worries voters more: the idea that the government may do too little, or that it might overreact to the economic downturn and do too much?

Only 42 percent are worried the government might do too little to fix the economy. That compares with 46 percent who fear it may do too much.

Economists have warned that over-stimulating the economy could lead to runaway inflation, once the immediate crisis has passed.
