Should tenure for teachers be part of America's public education system?

Maybe -- I guess it helps keep good teachers, but doesn't it make it hard to fire bad ones?

Yes -- Tenure is earned, and it's needed to keep teachers in the profession.

No -- Tenure hijacks the teacher review process. Reward the good teachers, fire the bad ones.

I like tenure ONLY as far as when layoffs are concerned and the playing field is even. However very very rarely is it an even playing field.

First fire bad teachers or poor performers. Next look at what your school needs the least of and then go off tenure of that. But you can't fire a math teacher and expect a history teacher to pickup the slack as to be a good teacher one needs a sort of passion for the subject and thats part of the problem as well. To few teachers with a passion for any subject unless they are in a university heh.

Has anyone addressed the possibility that very good grammar school teachers aged 45 to 55 could be forced out because they only speak English? Mayor Bloomingidiot wants to end tenure here and make all teachers subject to being laid off.

Oh wait, it's not all teachers, he exempted teachers in the ESL programs.

ESL stands for English as a Second Language.

It refers to teachers who's primary language is NOT English. Basically promoting non English teachers mainly those teaching languages other then English and non English Culture teachers but can effect any other teacher as well as long as their primary language is NOT English.

Actually, that's not correct. ESL means English as a Second Language, yes, but that's what they teach, not who they are. (The History teacher isn't long dead, either.). It's a specific form of teaching specialty.

And since a lot of their job is teaching and modeling English, they'll generally be native English speakers. Any language is best taught that way.
