Survey names transportation, immigration hot topics

STAUNTON — Locals named transportation, immigration, education and health as major concerns in a survey released this week by Del. Steve Landes, R-Weyers Cave.
More than 1,650 constituents in the 25th House District completed the 21-question survey. Here are some key numbers from the results:

- 45 percent favor increasing the fines paid by drivers who repeatedly earn moving violations.
- 44 percent favor reforming VDOT and streamlining its bureaucracy.
- 92 percent favor amending the Constitution of Virginia to require the Transportation Trust Fund be used exclusively for transportation.
- 91 percent support giving local governments the authority to deny new residential developments in their areas until it is determined that the local infrastructure has the capacity to handle the projected increase in population.
- 94 percent do not believe illegal aliens should be eligible to receive taxpayer supported in-state tuition rates at Virginia’s public colleges and universities.
- 93 percent favor penalizing businesses that knowingly hire illegal aliens.
- 92 percent support allowing state troopers and local police officers in Virginia to detain and hold illegal aliens for deportation when they are pulled over for a traffic violation or arrested for another crime.
