terminology
"Illegal Alien" is the best term since it has been in use for hundreds of years in the standard immigration laws of this country. No one can accuse someone of having made it up out of bias against a particular group. The term "alien" meaning someone or something that is foreign or out of place, is a beautiful old English word that is derived from the Latin and it is in all the dictionaries. Unfortunately in recent years this word has become overused in the context of Hollywood movies about space aliens and a lot of silly uneducated people cannot seem to get past this connotation. As a consequence some people have advocated to drop the term Illegal alien in favor of the term "Illegal Immigrant". I understand their motives but I simply do not think this terminology is good or accurate Grammar. Essentially, according to the dictionary, an immigrant is a person who comes to a country for the purpose of staying there permanently and becoming a citizen. Thus some one who comes as a tourist or a student or someone planning a temporary stay for business is not an Immigrant. Furthermore, although some of the illegal aliens in our country may plan to stay permanently, this is not true of all and hence to use Illegal immigrant as a blanket description is totally incorrect. In fact studies have shown that the majority of illegal aliens simply plan to make some fast money and have no intention of staying permanently. In addition many illegal aliens falsely claim to be tourists or students when they arrive and then refuse to leave when their visas expire. Such people should be called "illegal students" or "illegal tourists" and certainly not "illegal immigrants". In any case if one wants an alternative to the term "Illegal Alien" then I would suggest "Illegal Migrant" or instead of "illegal Immigrant". By definition, Migrants are individuals who have traveled from distant places, so the term "Illegal Migrant" provides a correct description for any foreigner who, for any reason, has entered out country illegally. It is not as pretty and elegant as "illegal Alien" but least this is a correct and accurate use of the English language.
