Fasten your seat belts: Lindbergh Field is launching a $1 billion terminal expansion that will make the airport tougher to navigate during construction.

As soon as next week, nearly 400 parking spaces will be removed temporarily from the Terminal 2 lot, on the west end of the airfield, as the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority begins work on a new dual-level roadway near the front steps of the terminal.

The agency also is adding 10 boarding gates, concession space and more security check-in lanes as part of the three-year overhaul.

Authority officials will close the entire 1,286-space Terminal 2 parking lot for at least several months starting early next year, but say they will provide an equivalent number of nearby spots that will be accessible by shuttle bus.

“There’s going to be some pain as we go through this construction project,â€

This is a ridiculous waste of money, but I am sure a great employment project for illegal workforce.

We have 90 million passengers per year in Atlanta now. The lines at the airport look like a bad day in Mumbai. We have to make reservations at off site airport parking lots in order to avoid having to park in the flood zones. Forget parking at the airport, can't find a spot hardly in the off site places.

Roads to the airport are frequently standstills, two hour wait lines for screening, and at time the lines have snaked out the door.

So, who is getting paid off in California?

San Diego has been planning this expansion for 10 years. The date to start was set 4 or 5 years ago. There is a tax on the ticket of every passenger who takes off from San Diego and a tax on the ticket every passenger who lands at San Diego, plus a landing fee and takeoff fee for every plane to pay off the bonds that pay for this construction.
