FRESNO, Calif. — California State University officials are celebrating the largest single cash gift the public system has ever received: a $29.4 million check to fund agricultural research and facilities at Fresno State.

President John Welty announced the donation to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology on Tuesday. The gift was made on behalf of the Jordan family, who operated a construction business and cattle ranch in the East Bay.

University officials say the donors first developed a relationship with a retired Fresno State agricultural economics professor they met at a motor home rally.

Welty plans to ask CSU trustees to rename the college the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in the family's honor.
