1 Arrested After Woman Says Her Child Was Thrown From 3rd Floor At MOA

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A child was rushed to a hospital Friday morning after reportedly being thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America, and one person has been taken into custody.

A witness at the Bloomington mall told WCCO that a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third floor balcony. This was near the southeast corner of the mall.

“She was screaming ‘Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge,'” Brian Johnson said.
Bloomington Police reported that the victim was 5 years old. The police chief said this appears to have been an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public.
The police department is working with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office crime lab to investigate the incident, and they are also working with the mall to determine if any surveillance video exists of the incident.
Emergency crews could be seen performing CPR on the child in the southeast corner of the mall. A large amount of blood was on the floor.

Allina Health officials said an ambulance took the child to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. The family is currently with the child, police said.

A source at the scene tells WCCO that the person who threw, or possibly pushed, the child fled the mall and was apprehended near the light rail station. The source said the victim was a young boy.
The suspect is a 24-year-old man, who was not named. Police said they do not, at this time, believe the man to have been related to the victim.
Metro Transit interrupted Blue Line service into or out of the mall due to the police activity, but as of 11:30 a.m. had restored service on the light rail trains.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A child was rushed to a hospital Friday morning after reportedly being thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America, and one person has been taken into custody.
A witness at the Bloomington mall told WCCO that a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third floor balcony. This was near the southeast corner of the mall.
“She was screaming ‘Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge,'” Brian Johnson said.
Bloomington Police reported that the victim was 5 years old.
A source at the scene told WCCO that the person who threw, or possibly pushed, the child fled the mall and was apprehended near the light rail station. Later Friday afternoon, police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, who is from the metro area.

Police said they do not, at this time, believe Aranda to have been related to the victim or known by the family. The police chief said this appears to have been an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public.
Aranda, who is being held on suspected attempted homicide, had been banned from Mall of America in the past, and was charged and convicted of misdemeanors in two separate incidents at the mall in 2015. In July of that year, Aranda was charged with causing damage inside stores, throwing items off of a balcony to a lower level and resisting arrest. Aranda was then charged in October of that year for throwing a glass of water and a glass of tea at a woman inside of Twin City Grill after she refused to buy him food.
Aranda was also charged in August of 2015 with destroying computers in a north Minneapolis library. According to the criminal complaint, Aranda told officers that “he has some anger issues,” and that, “it does not happen all the time.”
The police department is working with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office crime lab to investigate the incident, and they are also working with the mall to determine if any surveillance video exists of the incident.

Friday, the shocking news broke that a 5-year boy had been the victim of an unthinkable act of violence at the Mall Of America. A family friend has now set up a GoFundMePage for the child.
Landon, the victim, is fighting for his life and family friend Noah Hanneman set up the page while also providing an update:

This is Landon, he is the sweetest kindest 5 year old you will ever meet. His soul is soft and gentle and instantly brings a smile to everybody he meets. He is full of energy and life and enjoys soccer, playing with friends and family and playing hockey with his brother and sister. He was enjoying a day at the Mall of America with his mom and friend on Friday morning when a stranger maliciously grabbed him and threw him over the 3rd floor balcony for no apparent reason. The family doesn’t know him and are completely clueless as to why this monster would target their family with this heinous act of violence. My wife and Kari(mother) have been best friends since they were 3 years old. They have grown up together, started their families together and truly have a lifelong friendship for the ages. Their family is always so generous to others, they give without expecting anything in return and are the type of family you always hope to live next door. Landon has a very long road to recovery ahead of him. He suffered life threatening injuries, many people who fall from that distance aren’t as lucky to make it. He has many surgeries ahead in his life to try to get back to a normal life for a young, vibrant boy. We started this GoFundMe for their family to help cover the immense medical costs and rehabilitation costs for the long ahead. Police have identified the 24-year-old man who is accused of tossing a five-year-old boy from the third floor at the Mall of America on Friday.

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, who is from the Minneapolis metro area, was charged attempted homicide and is currently being held at the Bloomington Police Department.
Police were called to the Mall of America in Bloomington this morning after the man, who is not thought to be of any relation, allegedly threw the child from the balcony.

Brian Johnson, a Minneapolis resident, told the Daily News he didn't see the incident, but said he saw the aftermath.
He said the child was lying 'motionless, he was in a pool of blood.'
'Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown,' Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts said.
Police officers gave the child first aid along with witnesses, Potts said.
'The child did suffer significant injuries,' he said. 'The child has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care.'

According to Potts, witnesses told police the person suspected of pushing or throwing the child 'took off running immediately after the incident.'
He's currently at the Bloomington Police Department, Potts said, and authorities don't believe there is any further threat to the public.
'At this time, we do not believe that there is a relationship between the child or the family of the child,'
Potts said, emphasizing that police believe this to be an 'isolated incident.'
The area where the fall occurred has been closed.
“This was a senseless act and words cannot truly express our profound shock and sadness,' the Mall of America said in a statement on Friday. 'Our immediate and only concern is for the wellbeing of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident.
'We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance. We know that this is a concerning event for all of us. As the Bloomington Police Department continues to investigate how and why this isolated incident happened, we will provide our full cooperation.'
