10 slain, 16 wounded in Chicago over weekend, including 16-year-old girl

Ten people were slain and another 16 people were wounded in Chicago over the weekend, including a 16-year-old girl stabbed to death during a fight on the South Side, according to police.

, a popular track standout at Johnson College Prep, was stabbed in the chest when a large group began fighting around 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6500 block of South King Drive in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman.


Police initially said two people were in custody.

But they later said no one had been arrested.


Nine people were shot to death in weekend gun violence, including a 17-year-old boy killed in Lawndale and two people found with fatal gunshot wounds in an SUV on the Kennedy Expressway.


Most of the fatal shootings occurred on the West Side, where the 17-year-old was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. The crime scene took up nearly the entire 1500 block of South Karlov Avenue, between rows of large new single-family homes.

On the Kennedy, Eric Taylor, 43, and Camille Cooley, 36, were found dead in a silver Chevrolet Tahoe early Sunday with gunshot wounds to their heads, according to Illinois State Police.


A gun was found inside the Tahoe, and one of the passenger-side windows was shattered. As of early Monday, police were not releasing more information about the deaths.


The number of homicides was up from last weekend's eight. But the number of people wounded in non-fatal shootings was significantly down from 43 last weekend.


At least 1,300 people have been shot so far this year, at least 231 of them fatally.


On Friday night
, one person was killed and four were injured;from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, six people were fatally shot and eight wounded; and from Sunday afternoon to early Monday two people were killed and four were injured.
