Looking for work? More than 100 employers will be on hand at NMSU for job fair next week

LAS CRUCES - Are you looking for a job? This week there is an opportunity at New Mexico State University for you to meet with more than 100 potential employers.

NMSU's Career Services department will conduct its annual Career Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Corbett Center Student Union on campus. The two-day event is free and open to the public, although Roseanne Bensley, associate director of career services, said that many of the employers will be looking for workers with some sort of higher education.

"The majority of employers will be looking for (people with) associate degrees and above," she said.

There will be a wide variety of companies and agencies on hand, though, and she said anyone looking for work might be able to benefit from attending.

    ON HAND

If you are not sure whether there will be an employer that would be interested in you, visit the website careerservices.nmsu.edu/fairs/expo/expo11.html to see a list of who will be on hand. Of the more than 100 companies and agencies, this list is as diverse as Exxon Mobil, Frito Lay, Walgreens and the CIA. Locally, Alaska Structures, Sitel, Allstate Insurance and others will have representatives.

Government as well as private industry jobs will be available.

    BE PREPARED

Bensley said that, if you're going to show up - whether you are an NMSU student or someone already in the workforce - make sure you prepare. Visit the NMSU Career services website and peruse the list of companies who will be on hand, figure out some of the ones you'll wish to speak with, and look them up online.
"The candidate has to be prepared and the candidate must indicate to the employer that they've done their research," she said. "The employer does not have the time to educate everyone."

Bensley said that, in the current job market - with many workers from which to choose - employers can be more selective and if you show that you are unprepared, the company can pass you by.

"Preparation doesn't mean an hour of research per employer, but it does mean at least 15 minutes or so scanning their website for info," she said.

    DRESS THE PART

There are stories that float around the Career Services department of potential employees who show up in jeans and a t-shirt or even, in one case, bunny slippers.

"Another part of preparation is dressing for success," Bensley said. "A person doesn't have to spend a lot of money to be neat and clean. There are plenty of resources available for an individual to locate affordable clothing."

She said business attire can sometimes be found in second-hand stores like Savers and Goodwill and that some chain retailers also have clearance racks and sales.

"A gentleman should wear a dress shirt and a tie, shinned shoes and dress pants, not jeans," Bensley said. "Women should were a dress, or a skirt, or a pantsuit - some type of attire that says, 'I'm here to be an employee."

    OTHER OPPORTUNITIES DVR

There will be more opportunities to meet with employers. Workforce Solutions usually has a pair of job fairs during the year and you can call (575) 524-6250 to check on those dates. Also, NMSU will have more job fairs throughout the college year, including its Graduate and Professional Job Fair on Oct. 4 and its Educator's Job Fair on April 18 and 19.

Next month, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation - which helps disabled will conduct a job fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 25 at Hotel Encanto at 705 S. Telshor Blvd.

"We look forward to educating participating employers on the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities," said Shirley Gonzales with DVR.
