If Only we had more men in the White House like Ike

1969: World mourns death of Ike Former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower died of heart failure today while at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. He had long been battling heart problems, since his first heart attack in 1955.

"The 78-year-old five-star general, known as 'Ike' throughout the world, was hit by congestive heart failure March 15 and again last Monday while recuperating from an intestinal operation and pneumonia complications," wrote the Ironwood Daily Globe on March 28, 1969. "With the rugged constitution of a Kansas farm boy, he already had battled back from seven heart attacks before undergoing surgery for an intestinal obstruction Feb. 23."

President Richard Nixon declared the following Monday a national day of mourning throughout the United States. However, the rest of the world also paid tribute to the famous World War II Army general. President Charles de Gaulle of France called Eisenhower "a great soldier, an eminent statesman, a sincere friend of France and one for whom I had profound affection," according to an article in the Independent Press-Telegram.
