White House Rebuke: Angry Dems Shut Down Vote

White House Rebuke: Angry Dems Shut Down Vote

A bloc of African American House Democrats, angry and worried that not enough is being done about high unemployment by the administration, forced the postponement of a much-anticipated vote Thursday on comprehensive financial regulation reform.

The Financial Services Committee had finished hearing amendments around 3 p.m. and recessed, planning to return at 4 for a final vote on the package. But during the break, some of the Democrats on the committee pigeonholed Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and told him they wouldn't vote for the bill because of the deepening problem of unemployment in their districts.

The refusal to vote for the package, a key priority of the administration, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in particular, was portrayed as a direct rebuke of the White House's "lack of response to the economic situation."

"We will not be proceeding to passage today," Frank began. "I have been meeting with members of the committee, particularly the members of the Congressional Black Caucus, who have informed me that they are troubled by what they believe is the lack of response to the economic situation that is confronting them on the part of the administration, and therefore do not feel that they could -- in deference to the various constituencies that they represent -- vote for passage."

The CBC met earlier this week with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and expressed dissatisfaction with the administration's response to the unemployment situation, an aide familiar with the meeting said.

There are ten CBC members on the Financial Services Committee.

"The recession has created a unique systemic risk that threatens all parts of the African-American community, including the poor and the middle class," said Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), a subcommittee chair, in a statement after shutting down the vote. "I have always been committed to addressing that risk and will continue to do so. This is a critical issue for my constituents."

The bill was scheduled to be considered on the House floor during the second week of December. Today's vote was postponed until the Tuesday after the Thanksgiving break. In the meantime, the Democratic leadership is working on job-creating legislation they want to pass before Christmas.

"Nothing is lost by waiting ten days," said Frank. That's assuming, he added, that he can put the bill's coalition back together. "Obviously, if there are not the votes for the bill, it will not come up."

GO Congressional Black Caucus!! Woo Hoo!! Damn straight! It's about time you started standing up for your people and demanding jobs. Shut down all the votes, all of them, until this Administration and every politician from Bangor, Maine to Portland, Oregon, from Minneapolis, Minnesota to New Orleans, Lousiana from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Miami, Florida and Chicago, Illinois to Dallas, Texas and all points North, South, East and West of them ... COMMITS to stopping illegal immigration, securing our borders, enforcing US immigration law, deporting illegal aliens and protecting our trade, without if, and or but. No excuses, no exceptions, no mercy.

This is your country, these are your jobs, fight for them. If we don't fight for our own jobs, you can bet your last dollar if you still have it, no one else will.

And get those unions on the phone and tell them to get up off their butts, out of their union halls and down to DC and out to every state capital in the country to stand up for American labor and American jobs and tell these useless politico punks that if your PayPals want to sell it here, then they're going to have to make it here with American Workers. Period. No excuses, no exceptions, no mercy.

Protected trade and immigration controls built this country, these two vital policies are responsible for the economic superiority of the United States and our high standard of living. We're broke today for 3 reasons, we abandoned protected trade for "free trade treason", abandoned our borders for cheap labor and a free-flow of illegal drugs, and abandoned our liberty for a mandated tax system that forced the innocent to pay for the consequences of the former two.

It's been a Treason Trifecta that's turned our citizens into Indebted Beggars, our industries into Fleeing Rodents and our governments into Taxing Monkeys.

Stop the insanity. You're The Americans. It's what you were born and raised to do. If our parents could stop Hitler from destroying Europe and Hirohito from conoquering the Pacific, then we can sure as hell stop a bunch of Rodents and Monkeys from destroying our own country.

It's not a problem that only one race is suffering.

All Americans are hurting right now. But glad that they are holding up legislation as that will help Americans of ALL races.

Government just creates the policies that either a) steal the jobs Americans created or would create to serve our market and hands them off to other countries to back-haul those products into the US with no benefit to our economy or b) protects the jobs Americans create or would create to serve our market and retains them for the benefit of our economy.

Judy, has anyone told you you're "the bomb" lately??!?
Awesomely well said. Maybe you might consider running for office. For some reason what you said tonight really resonated with me, but then again a lot of your other posts have too.

I'll tell you what has created a systemic risk that threatens all parts of the African-American community.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and those who apologize for and defend this illegal act should be addressed! Illegal immigration is destroying opportunities for many Americans who cannot compete with this cheap and illegal labor source!

When are you going to address that risk Rep. Maxine Waters ?
