2 tons of opium confiscated

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan authorities on Wednesday seized more than two tons of opium during a patrol, officials said.

The huge cache of drugs was found in the Reg-e Khan Heshin district of Helmand province, according to a news release.

A joint Afghan-international patrol approached several vehicles whose drivers attempted to flee, authorities said.

One of the vehicles became stuck in the sand. Inside, the Afghan Border Police found 4,600 pounds (2,090 kilograms) of raw opium and approximately 24 pounds (11 kilograms) of a substance believed to be heroin.

Authorities also confiscated a satellite phone and a two-way radio. Two men were arrested for possession of the drugs, the news release said.
