January was a miserable month for California workers, with 55 of the state's 58 counties registering double digit unemployment, reports the state Employment Development Department.

And which were the three lucky counties with less than 10% unemployment in January?

Mono County, in the eastern Sierras, at 8.1%; Marin County just north of San Francisco with 8.9%, and San Mateo County in the Silicon Valley recording 9.7%. Orange County's record 10.1% unemployment was still fourth lowest in the state.

Meanwhile, seven California counties — all in rural areas — topped 20% unemployment, led by Imperial at 27.3%.

The January jobless rate statewide was 13.2% when compared to the counties, whose rates are not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations. Seasonally adjusted, the state's rate was 12.5%.
