Man who had been shot over the summer is killed in South Side store

Homicides Tuesday in Chicago's South Austin, Gresham and Chatham neighborhoods



Four people have been killed and at least eleven wounded in shootings on the South and West sides since Tuesday morning, police said.

A 38-year-old man was found shot to death Tuesday night in a car in the South Austin neighborhood, police said.


Officers responded to a call of shots fired and found the man sitting in the driver's seat in the 1100 block of North LeClaire Avenue, police said.


The man had been shot in the head. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He was identified as Hakizimana Scott, of the 800 block of North Laramie Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.


Chicago Under the Gun 2014

Scott was shot to death on the same block where, on Dec. 31, 1994, he handed a gun to another man, who then shot to death a college student one semester away from graduation, according to court records.
Scott originally was convicted and sentenced to 80 years in prison in the killing of Dawnyel Nicole Freeman, but appealed, eventually pleading guilty to murder in 2004. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison, and received credit for serving 9 years, according to court records, but it was unclear when he was paroled.
Hours earlier, a 20-year-old man was slain in the 7800 block of South Lowe Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood about 8:55 p.m., police said.
Officers responded to a calls of a person shot and found the 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest in the basement of a building, police said.
The man was identified as Trevon Williams, 20, of the 6400 block of South Lowe Avenue. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 9:28 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Also Tuesday evening, a 19-year-old man was shot in the chest and shoulder about 7:50 p.m. in the 400 block of North Lawler Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood. He was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, police said.
He was identified as Abraham Cooper, of the 4800 block of West Fullerton Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office. Further details about the killings were not immediately available.
About 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, a 23-year-old man was killed in a store in the 400 block of East 79th Street in the Chatham neighborhood. He man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, according to police and was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
Police said victim was shot by a man he had encountered earlier while entering the store.


Chicago shooting victims

Police said they are reviewing surveillance video. It was the second time this year that the victim had been shot, police said.
Officals at the medical examiner's office later identified the man as Glenn Houston Jr., of the 7700 block of South Rhodes Avenue.
In the most recent nonfatal shooting, a man was arrested after police allegedly saw him shoot another man during a suspected armed robbery Tuesday night in Little Village.
Officers on patrol spotted a gunman shooting a 28-year-old man in the 2200 block of South Marshall Boulevard about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Officer Ron Gaines, a police spokesman.
Officers chased the gunman on foot and arrested him, police said. During the pursuit, officer fired shots, but no one was hit, police said. Charges are pending against the gunman, whose age was not immediately available, police said.

The man who was shot was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition. He was treated for a gunshot wound to his back, police said.
About 10 p.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the city's Lawndale neighborhood.
The man was standing in an alley in the 2400 block of West Taylor Street when he got into an argument with another man who then pulled a gun and shot him, police said.
The man was shot in the right thigh, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of Tuesday night.
Two males were wounded in the 6000 block of South Champlain Avenue in the West Woodlawn neighborhood about 8:50 p.m., Officer Thomas Sweeney said. One was taken to Stroger Hospital, the other to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
A 39-year-old man was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.
The man was standing in a parking lot in the 3700 block of West Chicago Avenue when a group of four males walked up to him and opened fire, police said.
The victim was shot in his left hip. He drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Gaines said.
About 8:38 p.m. in the Gresham neighborhood, a 24-year-old man was walking in the 7700 block of South May Street when a vehicle pulled up and someone opened fire, hitting him in both legs, Sweeney said. The man was in good condition at Stroger Hospital.
A 17-year-old boy told police he was shot in the leg about 7:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North Homan Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, Sweeney said. The boy walked into Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.
The boy told police he was shot in a robbery.
Earlier, two men were shot in the 800 block of East 87th Place in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. That happened about 1:55 p.m. A 39-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with an upper leg wound and a 34-year-old man walked into Jackson Park Hospital with a lower abdomen wound, police said. Both were in good condition.
A 25-year-old man was shot about 10 a.m. near 87th and Morgan streets in the Gresham neighborhood about 10 a.m. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a leg wound and his condition had been stabilized, police said. The man told police he "heard shots and felt pain."
Earlier, about 9:40 a.m., a 22-year-old man was shot near 71st Street and Winchester Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood. He was dropped off at Holy Cross Hospital with a leg wound, police said. Someone shot him from inside a passing car.
No one is in custody for the shootings.
