4 suspected Ga. militia members charged in plot

    By GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press
    3:21 p.m., Nov. 1, 2011

ATLANTA — Four suspected members of a fringe north Georgia militia group have been charged with plotting to buy explosives and planning to manufacture a deadly toxin to attack government officials.

The U.S. Attorney's office said Tuesday the four were part of a group that tried to obtain an unregistered explosive device and silencer and plotted to manufacture a biological toxin called ricin.

The four are: 73-year-old Frederick Thomas, 67-year-old Dan Roberts, 65-year-old Ray Adams and 68-year-old Samuel Crump. They live in Cleveland and Toccoa.

Two are charged with purchasing what they believed to be explosives and a silencer. The other two are accused of taking steps to produce the toxin.

In an interview with the AP, Thomas' wife Charlotte called the charges "baloney."

Attorneys for the four were not immediately identified.

FBI: Four militia members plotted to attack buildings, release poison

'I'd say the first ones that need to die is the ones in the government buildings'

    By Pete WilliamsJustice correspondent
    NBC News

WASHINGTON — Four Georgia men in their 60s and 70s were arrested Tuesday, accused of being members of a right-wing militia group that plotted to attack federal office buildings and to disperse a deadly biological poison in Atlanta.

Their alleged plot was revealed to the FBI by a confidential informant last spring, and members of the group have been meeting since May with someone they thought was a black-market weapons dealer but who turned out to be an undercover federal agent, according to court documents.

No attacks were ever attempted. Federal officials say the men were disrupted before they could act on the plot.

The documents say the men, Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, Ga.; Dan Roberts, 67, Ray Adams, 65, and Samuel Crump, 68, all of Toccoa, called themselves "the covert group" and began in March to talk about staging attacks against federal targets including the IRS.

A confidential informant secretly recorded some of the meetings for the FBI.

"I'd say the first ones that need to die is the ones in the government buildings," Adams was overheard saying in an April 16 meeting, according to the FBI.

"When it comes down to it, I can kill somebody," he allegedly said.

They allegedly obtained a silencer from the undercover agent. Crump claimed he could produce ricin, a deadly biological agent, and talked about dispersing it from a car driving on an interstate highway, according to court documents.

"Ya get on the trunk of Atlanta, you get up on the north side, ya get on 41, ya throw it out there right on 285, ya go up 41 or 75, go up 75 to get away from it. Keep the heater on, that way keeps the pressure out. Don't roll your window down," he told the informant, according to court documents.

According to federal investigators, Crump had worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta in the past doing "maintenance-type services" for a contractor, and Adams used to work for a U.S. Department of Agriculture agency called the Agricultural Research Service as a lab technician.

"While many are focused on the threat posed by international violent extremists, this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens without our own borders who threaten our safety and security," said the U.S. attorney in Atlanta, Sally Quillian Yates, in a written statement.

North Georgia Men Arrested, Charged in Plots to Purchase Explosives, Silencer and to Manufacture a Biological Toxin

    U.S. Attorney’s Office November 01, 2011
    Northern District of Georgia(404) 581-6000

ATLANTA—Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, Ga.; Dan Roberts, 67, of Toccoa, Ga.; Ray H. Adams, 65, of Toccoa; and Samuel J. Crump, 68, of Toccoa, were arrested today relating to plans to obtain an unregistered explosive device and silencer and to manufacture the biological toxin ricin for use in attacks against other U.S. citizens and government personnel and officials.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Sally Quillian Yates said, “These defendants, who are alleged to be part of a fringe militia group, are charged with planning attacks against their own fellow citizens and government. To carry out their agenda, two of the defendants allegedly purchased purported explosives and a silencer, while the other two defendants took steps to attempt to produce a deadly biological toxin. While many are focused on the threat posed by international violent extremists, this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens within our own borders who threaten our safety and security.â€

    The Waffle House Gang

Here's some background on the four Georgia men arrested for plotting to blow up and/or poison people in the federal government.

TOCCOA, Ga. — At the Waffle House here, no one can believe that the gray-haired men who came in almost daily for egg sandwiches and coffee could have been terrorists plotting to blow up government buildings and kill masses of people using poison from a bean plant that people in this rural part of the state grow to ward off moles.

The four men — bespectacled and so hard of hearing that they strained on Wednesday to hear a federal judge at their initial court appearances in Gainesville, Ga. — have been accused of conspiracy and may be linked to a loose association of fringe militia groups targeting a government they believe is out of control, according to court papers.

“There’s two schools of thought on this: go for the feds or go for the locals,â€
