5.9-magnitude earthquake shakes Turkey

(CNN) -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey early Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, deaths or damage.

The earthquake's epicenter was in eastern Turkey, 45 kilometers (28 miles) west of the town of Bingol, and 625 kilometers (388 miles) east of Ankara, the country's capital.

The earthquake struck at 4:32 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), the USGS said.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — An official says at least five people have died in a strong earthquake that hit the eastern province of Elazig.

Gov. Muammer Erol says the victims are from the small village of Okcular.

The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory says the quake occurred at 4:32 a.m. local time Monday. It was followed by an aftershock measuring 4.1.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the North Anatolian fault.

In 1999, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

A strong, pre-dawn earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6 struck eastern Turkey today, killing 57 people as it knocked down stone or mud-brick houses and minarets in at least six villages, the government said. Turkey's crisis center said about 100 other people were injured in the quake, which hit at 4:32 a.m. in Elazig province, about 340 miles east of Ankara, the capital. The earthquake, which caught many people as they slept, was centered near the village of Basyurt and followed by more than 50 aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.5 and 5.3, the Kandilli seismology center said.
