About 250 Inmates Injured in Riot at Calif. Prison

LOS ANGELES -- A California state prison near Los Angeles remains on lockdown after a riot sent 55 prisoners to hospitals.
A switchboard operator at the California Institution for Men in Chino says the lockdown Sunday will remain in effect "indefinitely."
Prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove says 80 officers responded to the riot Saturday night, which involved some 1,300 inmates in seven barracks at the prison, which is about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. The uprising lasted for about four hours, and at least one unit caught fire.
More than 250 inmates suffered injuries ranging from stab wounds and slashes to head trauma. Some injuries were considered life-threatening.
No prison staff members were injured.

Prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove told KTLA-TV the riot started about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. He said the situation was under control as of Sunday morning. About 80 officers responded to the riot.
Hargrove says the inmates' injuries range from stab wounds and slashes to head trauma. Some injuries were considered life-threatening.
No prison staff members were injured.
The prison has seven units that house about 200 inmates each. At least one unit caught fire.

This may have to do with racial integration going on at the prison. This was a big deal a while back last year.
