ACORN Says US Funding Cut Was Unconstitutional

ACORN says US funding cut was unconstitutional

NEW YORK (AP) -- ACORN has filed a lawsuit claiming that Congress violated the Constitution when it passed a law cutting off federal funding to the organization.

The Center for Constitutional Rights filed the lawsuit on ACORN's behalf Thursday in Brooklyn federal court. It claims the law was unconstitutional because it punitively targeted an individual organization.

Messages for comment left at the White House and the federal agencies named in the suit were not immediately returned.

ACORN, short for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, portrays itself as an advocate for the poor and minorities.

The group's CEO, Bertha Lewis, says she underestimated the impact of the Congressional action. She says state, local and most private funds have been cut off as well.

Very funny. The White House has shown that it can and will shut down anybody it wants to.

I don't recall forcing US taxpayers to fund Acorn even being in the Constitution. SO what's their point?

Apparently they think "The Constitution" is broken, much like our immigration laws.

Acorn is seeded with other obama "Special Interest" groups and they get money from that source so there is no need for them to draw more attention to their criminal organization.......

The White House isn't concerned with the Constitution - why should we be?

The greater unconstitutionality would be that Congress targeted an individual organization for reward in the first place. Regardless of whether Congress specifically named ACORN for funding or just wrote the laws with ACORN and ACORN like organizations in mind, it's pretty much the same thing. That politicians would use public dollars to fund private political agenda organizations is as despicable and unethical as it should be unconstitutional. I do remember special earmarks sending taxpayer dollars straight to La Raza -- it all needs to stop.

Right on BlueHills. When Congress starts funding Muslim action groups under this same precedent, we might see some action.
