Macy's hiring 65,000 for the holidays

Macy's hiring 65,000 for the holidays

Macy's Inc. announced today it is hiring 65,000 people nationwide for its stores, call centers distribution centers and online fulfillment centers for this year's holidays.

The company said that's a slight increase from previous years based on expectations that sales will increase 3% to 3.5% in the second half of fiscal 2010. Macy's employs about 161,000 workers on a year-round basis

Macy's is already filling operations positions. Hiring for store sales positions will begin in early October, the company said.

"It is vitally important that our customers are well-served during the busiest shopping time of the year," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's chairman, president and chief administrative officer. "So we ramp up our workforce starting now and running through December."

To apply for a holiday job, go to Macy's online job site. Candidates who fill the company's criteria will get an email inviting them to an interview.

Macy's announcement comes four days after a forecast came out estimating that 500,000 to 600,000 people would be hired nationwide this year for the holidays.

The forecast, by international outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said that at the low end, that would be about the same as last year. If 600,000 are hired, it would be a 20% jump from 2009.

Retail hiring has been one of the few growth sectors in Orange County this year. Store owners added 4,000 jobs from August 2009 to this August, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Seasonal hiring could improve this year

Boston Business Journal - by Lisa van der Pool

Retail holiday hiring could get a boost this year, according to a report this week from human resources consultancy Challenger Gray & Christmas Inc.

Two consecutive months of sales gains may give retailers enough of a boost to increase their seasonal hiring of part-time workers this year, according to the report.

Last year retail payrolls grew by about 501,400 workers in October, November and December, according to non-seasonally adjusted data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That marked about a 30 percent increase over 2008, a tough year, when holiday hiring dropped to a 22-year low of 384,300 extra holiday helpers.

“Retailers do not want to be caught with too many workers at a time when many of the fundamentals needed for strong consumer spending remain a little shaky. There are still nearly 15 million Americans out of work and many have lost their homes or are struggling to hang on to them. This does not bode well for heavy holiday spending,â€
