Macy's Inc. announced today it is hiring 65,000 people nationwide for its stores, call centers distribution centers and online fulfillment centers for this year's holidays.

The company said that's a slight increase from previous years based on expectations that sales will increase 3% to 3.5% in the second half of fiscal 2010. Macy's employs about 161,000 workers on a year-round basis

Macy's is already filling operations positions. Hiring for store sales positions will begin in early October, the company said.

"It is vitally important that our customers are well-served during the busiest shopping time of the year," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's chairman, president and chief administrative officer. "So we ramp up our workforce starting now and running through December."

To apply for a holiday job, go to Macy's online job site. Candidates who fill the company's criteria will get an email inviting them to an interview.

Macy's announcement comes four days after a forecast came out estimating that 500,000 to 600,000 people would be hired nationwide this year for the holidays.

The forecast, by international outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said that at the low end, that would be about the same as last year. If 600,000 are hired, it would be a 20% jump from 2009.

Retail hiring has been one of the few growth sectors in Orange County this year. Store owners added 4,000 jobs from August 2009 to this August, according to the state Employment Development Department.
