Arctic ice refuses to melt as ordered There's something rot
Arctic ice refuses to melt as ordered
There's something rotten north of Denmark

Just a few weeks ago, predictions of Arctic ice collapse were buzzing all over the internet. Some scientists were predicting that the "North Pole may be ice-free for first time this summer". Others predicted that the entire "polar ice cap would disappear this summer".
The Arctic melt season is nearly done for this year. The sun is now very low above the horizon and will set for the winter at the North Pole in five weeks. And none of these dire predictions have come to pass. Yet there is, however, something odd going on with the ice data.
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado released an alarming graph on August 11, showing that Arctic ice was rapidly disappearing, back towards last year's record minimum. Their data shows Arctic sea ice extent only 10 per cent greater than this date in 2007, and the second lowest on record. Here's a smaller version of the graph:

The problem is that this graph does not appear to be correct. Other data sources show Arctic ice having made a nice recovery this summer. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center data shows 2008 ice nearly identical to 2002, 2005 and 2006. Maps of Arctic ice extent are readily available from several sources, including the University of Illinois, which keeps a daily archive for the last 30 years. A comparison of these maps (derived from NSIDC data) below shows that Arctic ice extent was 30 per cent greater on August 11, 2008 than it was on the August 12, 2007. (2008 is a leap year, so the dates are offset by one.)

The video below highlights the differences between those two dates. As you can see, ice has grown in nearly every direction since last summer - with a large increase in the area north of Siberia. Also note that the area around the Northwest Passage (west of Greenland) has seen a significant increase in ice. Some of the islands in the Canadian Archipelago are surrounded by more ice than they were during the summer of 1980.

The 30 per cent increase was calculated by counting pixels which contain colors representing ice. This is a conservative calculation, because of the map projection used. As the ice expands away from the pole, each new pixel represents a larger area - so the net effect is that the calculated 30 per cent increase is actually on the low side.
So how did NSIDC calculate a 10 per cent increase over 2007? Their graph appears to disagree with the maps by a factor of three (10 per cent vs. 30 per cent) - hardly a trivial discrepancy.
What melts the Arctic?
The Arctic did not experience the meltdowns forecast by NSIDC and the Norwegian Polar Year Secretariat. It didn't even come close. Additionally, some current graphs and press releases from NSIDC seem less than conservative. There appears to be a consistent pattern of overstatement related to Arctic ice loss.
We know that Arctic summer ice extent is largely determined by variable oceanic and atmospheric currents such as the Arctic Oscillation. NASA claimed last summer that "not all the large changes seen in Arctic climate in recent years are a result of long-term trends associated with global warming". The media tendency to knee-jerkingly blame everything on "global warming" makes for an easy story - but it is not based on solid science. ®
Bootnote
And what of the Antarctic? Down south, ice extent is well ahead of the recent average. Why isn't NSIDC making similarly high-profile press releases about the increase in Antarctic ice over the last 30 years?

Snow In Colorado High Country Could Total 3 Inches
Snow In Colorado High Country Could Total 3 Inches
Storm creates unusually wet, chilly start to the weekend

KUSA – A powerful storm system will continue to move into Colorado on Friday causing rain in the metro area and snow in the mountains.
Severe thunderstorms caused by a strong cold front ahead of the main storm system caused more than two dozen weather warnings on Thursday afternoon and evening.
Quarter-size hail was reported in Fort Collins, Wellington, Bellvue, Fort Lupton, Castle Rock, Limon and many other areas on Thursday. Ping-pong ball size hail was reported in southern Colorado near the Pueblo Reservoir.
Heavy rain also occurred in many areas on Thursday and early Friday morning. Some locations in Fort Collins and Aurora reported more than an inch of rain as of 7 a.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Denver had received more than a half inch of rain by early Friday morning. Lakewood, Englewood, Highlands Ranch, and Boulder also saw more than a half inch of rain.
For a complete list of rain total click here.Heavy showers also caused the Cherry Creek to rise above normal levels. A few bike commuters decided to brave the water as it rose over the bike paths. The swift moving Cherry Creek had risen so much it was covering at least half of the wheels of the bikes.
For Friday and Saturday, metro area residents should plan on occasional light and moderate rain showers along with cloudy skies and unseasonably chilly temperatures.
According to the 9NEWS Weather Team, temperatures will be 25 to 30 degrees below average for August on Friday and Saturday.
As the very cool air settles into the state, freezing temperatures will drop to about 10,500 feet on Friday, meaning some high country locations will see the rain change into snow.
Locations such as Rocky Mountain National Park, the Indian Peaks Wilderness, Berthoud Pass, and Mount Evans could see several inches of snow. However, the warm ground will prevent much of the snow from accumulating.
Seasonal roads above 11,000 feet such as Trail Ridge Road could be shut down on Friday because of the snow.
Communities along the Peak to Peak Highway such as Nederland, Ward, Allenspark, and Estes Park could also see snow but very little accumulation.
Mountain areas west of the Continental Divide will also see very little, if any, snow.
According to 9NEWS Meteorologist Ashton Altieri, significant snow in the Colorado mountains in mid August is unusual, but not unprecedented.
In fact, accumulating snow has been recorded in the high country every month of the year. In Denver, July and August are the only two months with no records of measurable snowfall. High temperatures in the 50s during August have also occurred before in Denver.

We have a responsibility to pic up after ourselves and be responsible citizens, but beyond that this planet and what it needs to do for itself to keep churning along is out of our control. This whole thing is such a crock. I was here for the global freeze thing. Every single thing they told us not to do, the powers that be did it and then some. We controlled our population growth, just so they can import people. While we were reusing and recycling, they were busy bringing in cheaper and more disposable goods from China and making products that break down and are now unsafe to re-use if it lasts at all. Big ticket items that used to last for decades, now have like a 5 year lifespan and are junk. While we were working on getting back to nature, they were genetically engineering our food.
They had us use cold water and re-usable items that harbor and spread germs to save energy and our landfills. They had the Dr's giving out antibiotics like candy, only to find we were creating super bugs and antibiotic resistant strains. They had us insulate like crazy only to find out that it holds in radon and causes mold because the home needs to breathe. As we were freezing to save energy, all they did was jack the price.
They told us to keep open spaces because if we didn't the heat would rise higher in cities and there would be more problems with flooding because the water needed somewhere to go........so atleast around here they have turned all our beautiful famland in to one massive concrete jungle of McMansions and condos and strip malls......so I have come to the firm conclusion that these idiots don't know their butt from a hole in the ground let alone much else. First clue.....mercury filled light bulbs.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Oh.....I forgot.....instead of doing something reasonable about clean air, they just moved the polluters to China along with our jobs and now it's their problem.........

Oh jimpasz.......this was like a relegion to me. I listened and was a devout follower. I could ramble for hours on all the BS they fed us only to un-do anything positive we had acheived. Went so far as to move to Florida because I was certain, and they told me, we'd be in a deep freeze here where I am now, by now. LOL They fooled this girl for sure coz I bought it hook line and sinker.......only to see what the powers that be have done. They've done more damage than we could ever do.

Stay focused
By the time any ice has melted......the civil war between the illegals and American citizens will be in effect. We have to keep our focus on the issue of Illegals and not the diversion issues our government wants us to think about....
