Veracruz (Mexico), May 16 (EFE).- An armed comando of 30 people broke in today into a southern prison of the Mexican state of Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico, and freed six prisoners, reported local authorities.

The facts were registered at 00,30 o'clock local time (05,30 GMT) in the penal one Duport Ostion at the port of Coatzacoalcos, situated 900 kilometers from the capital of the country.

According to sources from the Government of Veracruz, the armed men arrived in various vehicles and entered the prison by the front door, after subduing the custodians.

Half an hour later they freed six prisoners, accused of drug trafficking and that supposedly belong to the group of hitmen known as "The Zetas", armed arm of the Gulf Cartel.

The official versions mention that none of the guards were injured during the liberation of the criminals and that to one of the criminals stole their AR-15 automatic rifle.

The violent action took place ten days after that southern region of Veracruz was activated, next to the state of Tabasco, a special opeation against organized crime in which participated federal agents and Mexican soldiers.

The Attorney's office (district attorney's office) General of Justice of the State has opened for now an investigation on the event and cited to appear the security agents that witnessed the armed action.

The jail Duport Ostion, considered of medium security, is one of the largest prisons of Veracruz, from a total of 19 prisons.
