Public resentment against the ruling classes is growing in the wider middle east amid bloody attacks on demonstrators, as the region plunges into chaos. In Bahrain, King Hamad has asked his eldest son, to start a national dialogue to resolve the political crisis in the country. However, the Shia opposition group says it will join talks only after the government resigns and the troops behind a brutal crackdown leave the streets. Reports suggest riot police used supplies made by British companies to clear the protest. Human rights activist Barnaby Pace says the UK has been reckless in its arms sales.

Bahrain security forces open fire on crowds as thousands of protesters defied a government ban in Bahrain's capital Manama on Friday, and streamed towards the landmark square that had been the symbolic centre of the uprising against the Gulf nation's leaders. Hospital officials said at least 50 people were injured, some seriously.

Graphic amateur video: Protesters injured in Bahrain as troops open fire

    February 19, 2011

(WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS GRAPHIC FOOTAGE) At least 50 people have been injured as security forces in Bahrain opened fire on protesters for a second straight day. Thousands defied the government and marched towards Pearl Square on Friday.

Amateur videos posted on YouTube show chanting protesters marching towards what appear to be military vehicles before sustained gunfire erupts. The second video shows the same incident, but shot within the group of protesters walking towards the army position.

Throngs of anti-government protesters took over the square earlier in the week, setting up a camp with tents and placards, but they were driven out by riot police in a deadly assault on Thursday that killed five people and injured more than 200.
