The armed men arrived in various vehicles and they entered the prison by the front door.
Veracruz (Mexico), May 16 (EFE).- An armed comando of 30 people broke in today into a southern prison of the Mexican state of Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico, and freed six prisoners, reported local authorities.
The facts were registered at 00,30 o'clock local time (05,30 GMT) in the penal one Duport Ostion at the port of Coatzacoalcos, situated 900 kilometers from the capital of the country.
According to sources from the Government of Veracruz, the armed men arrived in various vehicles and entered the prison by the front door, after subduing the custodians.
Half an hour later they freed six prisoners, accused of drug trafficking and that supposedly belong to the group of hitmen known as "The Zetas", armed arm of the Gulf Cartel.
The official versions mention that none of the guards were injured during the liberation of the criminals and that to one of the criminals stole their AR-15 automatic rifle.
The violent action took place ten days after that southern region of Veracruz was activated, next to the state of Tabasco, a special opeation against organized crime in which participated federal agents and Mexican soldiers.
The Attorney's office (district attorney's office) General of Justice of the State has opened for now an investigation on the event and cited to appear the security agents that witnessed the armed action.
The jail Duport Ostion, considered of medium security, is one of the largest prisons of Veracruz, from a total of 19 prisons.

Sources close to the investigation indicate that a "significant" group of armed hitmen with rifles AK-47 and AR-15 arrived at the prison after submitting the custodians and police officers, then went into the interior to free to five presumed members of The Zetas.
It has transcended that prison authorities and of the state attorney's office have initiated the respective investigations into the interior of the prison.

Custodians--hope that means guards and not janitors.
Entered by the front door--so much for security.

The so-called custodians were probably payed in advance. It's easy to suspect that such a thing happened since none of the guards (excuse me, custodians) were injured. This has corrupt prison officials written all over it.
At the very least the "custodians" are cowards and poorly trained in the proper security measures."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**

So much for the Merida plan.
GOP: Merida plan likely to fail in House
WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- Ranking Republicans predict a $500 million measure to combat drug violence in Latin America will fail when the House votes on it Wednesday.
GOP lawmakers told the Washington Times they did not think the so-called Merida Initiative, named after the historic Mexican city in the Yucatan, would pass because it had been glommed on to a supplemental funding bill for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The supplemental spending bill is the not the appropriate vehicle for this particular funding initiative," said Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.
Some Republicans added that they had doubts about the effectiveness of the plan on the assumption that Mexican law-enforcement agencies were riddled with corruption and would undermine the Merida program.
The Times said Mexico has been urging passage of the plan, which would improve coordination of anti-drug efforts among the United States, Mexico and nations in Central America.
