Vice President Joe Biden says buy a shotgun for security, not an AR-15 (Video)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday that Americans don’t need semi-automatic weapons to protect their homes because a couple of blasts from a shotgun will scare off intruders.

“Buy a shotgun, buy a shotgun,” the vice president encouraged those worried about defending themselves. He was speaking in an online video as part of a Facebook town hall hosted by Parents Magazine on the administration’s strategy for reducing gun violence, which he has led at the direction of President Barack Obama.

Biden said he keeps two shotguns and shells locked up at home and he’s told his wife, Jill, to use them if she needs protection. He presumably was speaking about before he became vice president, a position that gives the couple full-time Secret Service protection.

“I said, ‘Jill, if there’s ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony … take that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house,’” Biden said. “You don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use and in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself.”

Biden’s answer came in response to a question posted by a Facebook user about whether the administration’s proposal to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines would make law-abiding citizens more of a target of criminals since they wouldn’t have a sufficient way of protecting themselves. Biden bristled at the question, saying he’s never heard such sentiments in the pages of Parents Magazine.

“But I’m delighted to answer them,” he added quickly.

Biden said he learned his lessons on gun safety from his father, who was a hunter. He said as a child, he wasn’t even allowed to point a cap gun at other children while playing cops and robbers. He said most gun owners are very responsible, but parents should make sure guns are locked up to keep children safe, just like pool gates and liquor cabinets.

He also said he doesn’t think the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms should be changed. He said limits on the use of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines is compatible with that right.

Joe Biden is at it, again.

Now he’s a firearms expert.

He tells Americans nobody needs an AR-15. All anyone needs is a shotgun.

One size fits all.

This is typical talk from would-be authoritarian know-it-alls. People in Washington love to decide what works and what doesn’t work for 315 million very different Americans in very different situations – whether it’s about firearms or refrigerators or toilets or automobiles.

I anticipated Biden’s little tirade about shotguns by a week with my column, “Why does anyone need an AR-15?”

Biden provided a perfect illustration of what I was talking about.

Big Brother knows best.

You don’t need an AR-15 – nobody does. They’re too hard to use. They’re too hard to aim, according to Biden. The shotgun is more than sufficient, he claims, for any self-defense need.

That, of course, raises the question: Why doesn’t the Secret Service that protects Joe Biden take his advice? Why don’t those agents all transition away from automatic and semi-automatic handguns and rifles to shotguns?

You know the answer: Biden is more important than you. And he knows darn well that taking a shotgun to a firefight involving Mac-10s is not going to work out well for the guy carrying the shotgun.

How about other police departments? Should they be limited to shotguns? How about the U.S. military? No one in their right mind, not even Joe Biden, would make that suggestion. But yet he makes it forcefully to 315 million Americans all in unique situations he could never begin to understand.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like shotguns. I own some. It is a good weapon for certain circumstances. But an AR-15 with a 30-round clip is much better for others.

Suppose, for instance, you are the victim of a home invasion by more than two people. A shotgun might help defend your home. But you have the reloading problem. You might not get the chance. Chances are better that an AR-15 with a 30-round clip will be more than sufficient to meet the challenge.

You find yourself outmanned, but, if you have an AR-15, you might not find yourself outgunned.

Why is that difficult for Joe Biden to understand?

Joe may be dumber than your average politician, but I will give him enough intellectual credit to conclude he knows exactly why he is pushing shotguns as the only legitimate means of self-defense for Americans.

He, like his clean and articulate boss, wants to disarm the American citizenry. They want to establish a government monopoly on force. Governments throughout the world have been doing it since the beginning of time.

But there’s more to this than meets the eye. They not only want to disarm the public. They also want to define your “needs” about everything. That’s even more dangerous.

The word “need” is the word that betrays the motivations of politicians pushing for gun confiscation.

What do they have in common? At the foundation, they are socialists. They don’t really believe in private property. They believe in Karl Marx’s philosophy: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” That was a slogan Marx popularized in 1875. Today, 138 years later, it still resonates in the hearts and minds of people all over the world – many of them unaware of its origin.

Notice the word “need” in that statement.

Socialists believe the entire society should be oriented to meeting people’s “needs,” with the government determining what those “needs” are.

Think about it this way: How would you like it if the government asked you the following questions:

• “Do you really need that spare bedroom?”
• “Do you really need that Big Gulp?”
• “Do you really need that Big Mac?”
• Do you really need that expensive cigar?”
• “Do you really need that second car?

Of course, as you know, governments are already asking some of these questions.

What it comes down to for them is this: If you don’t need it, you don’t get it.

Socialists aren’t for choice. They are for determining what you can have based on “need.”

Think about how absurd it is when a guy like Joe Biden, surrounded by automatic and semi-automatic firearms, says you don’t need any. You only need a shotgun.

Who are you going to believe – him or your own eyes?
