Black Leaders In Chicago Finally State The Obvious About Violent Crime

Chicago residents need to start taking responsibility for the city’s shootings, according to black leaders in the area.

The Chicago Police Department hosted an Operation Wake Up event Thursday where leaders urged residents to stop blaming the police, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Here’s a fact: When it comes to violence and our children, there is no side. We are all on the side of righteousness and justice on this,” Glen Brooks said, speaking in response to a widely-held view that Chicago protests only focus on police brutality.

“Nobody wants to see death and destruction visit upon their family, their neighbors or their communities,” Brooks, a CPD coordinator, added.

Numerous officials, police, residents and activists came to the event, which was held close to the place where a two-year-old boy and his aunt were shot over Facebook Live Tuesday. The little boy died from his injuries.

Aleta Clark, a Chicago activist, pointed out at the rally that the police weren’t responsible for those two victims.

“Guess what? Not one police did it this time. We did it. Where’s the outrage?” Clark asked the crowd.

Lavontay White, the two-year-old, was driving with his pregnant aunt and her boyfriend, Lazarec Collins when someone opened fire dozens of times on their vehicle. Both Collins and White died from their injuries.

White’s aunt managed to escape and caught the incident on Facebook Live.

“Call 911 … I got a bullet in my stomach … They shot him … Please, please. I can’t breathe,” White’s aunt said in the video.

Clark also criticized the community for the lack of response over the deaths in Chicago.

“And there is more people that stand in the [Air] Jordan line that there [are] out here in this community for this baby. This baby died for the decisions that we, as young adults, make,” she said.

Other speakers at the rally echoed her words. A first responder told the crowd it was time for them to fix the violence in their city, as too many children have already been lost to it.

“My message is to the community: Come together, block by block, neighbor by neighbor, friend by friend. It’s too many children been laid to rest early and we’re having family reunions every week,” stated Andrew Holmes, whose 11 year-old cousin died of gun violence.

A man has been charged with murder in connection with the Valentine’s Day triple shooting that left 2-year-old Lavontay White Jr. and his 26-year-old uncle dead — and injured a pregnant woman.

Devon Swan, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting, Chicago Police announced Saturday morning. Police said additional arrests are expected, and the department will announce more details at a noon press briefing at CPD headquarters.

Since 2008, Swan has been convicted of crimes including unlawful use of a weapon, armed robbery and drug possession, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. Most recently, he was released on parole in April 2016 while serving time for drug possession and violating electronic monitoring.

The fatal attack in an alley in North Lawndale was partially captured on a Facebook Live video that was being streamed by the pregnant woman when the shooting started.

The three were in a car in the alley in the 2300 block of South Kenneth Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when another vehicle drove past and someone got out and pulled out a gun, police said.
Lavontay and his uncle, Lazarec Collins, were both shot in the head, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The 20-year-old pregnant woman, Lavontay’s aunt, was shot in the abdomen and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. A relative told the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday that she had lost the baby, but police on Saturday said the unborn child was fine.

The family member who provided the information about the baby, a sister of Collins, asked that her identity be withheld.

Funeral services for Lavontay and Collins are set for Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Lawndale Christian Center at 3827 W. Ogden, with visitation at 11 a.m., according to the family member.

A GoFundMe page has been set up help with funeral arrangements for Lavontay.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson has called Collins a “documented gang member,” saying, “We believe that this was a targeted shooting, so these people were looking for him.”

It's just terrible what's going on. Look at that sweet little boy. It's just awful. I remember when I lived in a city, a little black girl in the cutest pink dress was having her 6th birthday party, friends and family all gathered around the table with her beautiful cake, and she was shot and killed blowing out the candles by a drive-by shooter. It broke the hearts of every person in that city. That was 20 plus years ago. To my knowledge, the shooter was never found.

He looks kinda drug crazed - how big of a part do drugs play in these senseless shootings? Another reason to boot out illegals with their mexican drug cartels operating in every city - also the guns, how are the guns getting there so easily and in such abundance?

These are gang hits, most of them. That's what this was. Collins the uncle, was a gang hit and the little boy was killed and the aunt was shot, because they were with Collins.

The black communities, the Churches, should work against criminals stronger....don't resign....then another Detroit coming. THey must fire corrupted mayor of the Chicago and all the clan over him, turn their trust to police, not against the police and work together, to clean the mess, corruption, fight for the peace in the city. I praying.

Too many lives lost, too many tears shed. The democrats have allowed this, plain and simple. Their policies have led to this. Add in the breakdown of the family, rewarding bad behavior, handing out goodies, not allowing the schools to improve or to fire incompetent teachers is so sad.

This is about gang murder, not gun control. Because as we all know, gun control only works on the people that obey the law. IMO
