I really hope she was not attakced because of a McCain bumper sticker. ATMs have videos.

(CNN) -- A Pennsylvania woman told police she was attacked at an ATM in Pittsburgh by a robber who became angry when he saw a John McCain bumper sticker on her car, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Police Department said Thursday.

Police cannot confirm whether a man attacked this woman because she had a McCain sticker on her car.

Public Information Officer Diane Richard said police cannot substantiate her story, however, and the investigation is ongoing.

Richard said the 20-year-old told investigators a man approached her Wednesday night at an ATM in the city's East End, put a blade to her neck and demanded money.

She said she gave him $60 and stepped away from him, Richard said.

But the woman said the man "became very angry" when he noticed her car had a bumper sticker supporting the GOP presidential nominee, according to Richard. The woman said he punched her in the back of the head, knocked her to the ground and "continued to punch and kick her while threatening her," the spokeswoman said.

Before he left, the woman said, he carved the letter "B" into her face with a knife, according to Richard. There was no indication what the "B" indicated.

The alleged assailant fled on foot, Richard said.

"We, the police, cannot substantiate this yet," she said. "This is what she told police."

The woman, who is not from Pittsburgh, refused medical attention, Richard said, although she told the investigating officer she would see a doctor Thursday. There was no update on her condition, she said.

Richard said the woman described her alleged attacker as a dark-skinned African-American, 6 feet 4 inches tall with a medium build and short dark hair, wearing dark clothing and shiny shoes.

McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker told CNN that McCain and running mate Sarah Palin "spoke to the victim and her family after learning about the incident earlier this afternoon."

Hazelbaker said the campaign would not offer more detail out of respect for the woman's privacy.

The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama responded to the report with a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

Never seen an atmosphere during a presidential election like this and I've lived through numerous.

I agree with you Jean, and it is disturbing.

If true, this cannot be tolerated, and I hope the police catch this animal. I read where it was reported the B was carved into the right side of her face, but if true, that would mean he carved it backwards. I would certainly understand her refusing to take an ambulance because of the cost, but to not seek medical treatment at all leaves me with doubts at this point.
What robber would just take $60, not try to have the victim pull out more from the ATM, and stick around long enough to carve a letter into the face of the victim? And what victim can stay still enough for a perfect letter B to be carved in his/her face?
That robber could be a surgeon...

I agree with you Jean we did not even see this kind of animosity back during the Vietnam era.It's getting very scary out there.

I thought the B had a weird placement too but if he had her down on the ground he could have been sanding over her head and the B is upside down so it looks backwards. OR sometimes the police reverse the image they release or the papers do so the B is actually on her left cheek and not her right like the photo shows.

Also, looks like she took a whack from a right hand in her left eye.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (CBS) ― She calls it a political attack -- a McCain campaign volunteer says she was attacked in Bloomfield. [at Citizens Bank on Liberty Ave at Pearl Street]

Ashley Todd, 20, claims it all happened because she supports Sen. John McCain in the presidential race.

Todd claims she was robbed at knife point then roughed up.

Patrick Graham, the president of College Republicans in Pittsburgh, told CBS station KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh that Todd works for the National College Republican Committee.

She's been in Pittsburgh about a week.

Graham said Todd was on her way to meeting, when she reported robbery and assault took place.

"It's a disgusting act of violence," said Graham, "almost like a hate crime, because she was basically attacked because solely because of her political belief, and no other reason."

Todd is a 20-year old Texas woman, a volunteer for the McCain-Palin campaign, who told police she was robbed and attacked by a man in Bloomfield.

A police report states that Todd said the incident occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday night near an ATM.

Todd said she made her ATM withdrawal and was approached from behind by a man who put a knife to her neck and demanded money.

She said she gave him $60 and managed to step away from the robber.

But, then Todd claimed the mugger spotted a McCain sticker on her car, and became angry.

She said she was punched in the back of the head, knocked to the ground and the man etched the letter "b" on the right side of her face.

Among other things, police are checking security cameras in the neighborhood to see what, if anything, they may have recorded.

A photo obtained by the Drudge Report website showed Todd after the alleged assault.

However, KDKA-TV could not verify the authenticity of the photo.

Pittsburgh Police did not take a photo of the woman.

The McCain-Palin campaign released a statement that said, in part, they were shaken up by the incident – calling it sick and disgusting.

A spokesman confirmed both McCain and Palin called Todd to express their concern.

An Obama-Biden campaign statement said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman, for her to make a speedy recover... and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended, and brought to justice."

Todd said she wasn't ready yet to talk publicly about what happened but she may have something to say on Friday.

This violence is being brought on by the false law breaking promises of these two idiot candidates. It is against our LAWS (remember those?) and Constitution to be giving illegals anything, other than handcuffs and a deportation slip.

By pandering to these violent minded people from third world countries and allowing them to be involved in our voting process, they feel they can "control" the vote of American citizens the way votes and voters are controlled in third world countries, such as by intimidation for expressing your support and views for a particular candidate that they feel isn't going to do what they want him or her to do.

Instead of treating these ILLEGAL ALIENS as De Facto citizens, speaking directly to them as if they matter, they should have been left completely out of the voting process and equation all together by every single Presidential candidate that pandered to Spanish speaking TV stations and radio stations. ILLEGAL ALIENS and their supporters are criminals and treasonists, which neither should have the right to vote or seek any sort of representation in this country by servants of the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

I agree with William, the "B" probably stands for "Barak."
