Border Patrol Seizes Undeclared Cash in Southeast California
(Monday, July 27, 2009)
Blythe, Calif. – Observant U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Blythe, Calif. station seized more than $37,000 in undeclared cash Friday night.
Agents discovered more than $37,000 hidden in a toolbox after a Border Patrol canine team detected the odor of contraband hidden within a 2007 Ford F-150 at the Highway 95 checkpoint.
While inspecting the toolbox, agents discovered $37,720 hidden within a gym bag. Border Patrol service dogs are trained to detect the odors of narcotics and concealed people. In this case, the service dog alerted to the gym bag that was emitting an odor consistent with a narcotic.
Both the money and the 2007 Ford F-150 were seized by the U.S. Border Patrol and transported to the Yuma station for processing. Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were released after being interviewed by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
In the past month, the Blythe station has seized a total of $61,805 in undeclared currency.
