    Boxer fundraising tops $13 million

    Boxer fundraising tops $13 million

    April 12th, 2010, 9:42 am
    Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

Sen. Barbara Boxer’s campaign just put out the word that the three-term Democratic incumbent has raised $2.4 million for the first quarter of this year bringing her fundraising total for her re-election campaign to more than $13 million.

Boxer had $8.7 million cash on hand as of March 31, according to the campaign. More than 71,000 people have contributed to Boxer so far. And 90 percent of the contributions to the campaign during the first quarter were $100 or less.

That will change later this month when the Boxer fundraising efforts will get a boost from President Barack Obama who will hold a fundraiser for her and the Democratic National Committee on April 19 in Los Angeles. Tickets for that event range from $250 for the general reception to$32,500 a couple for an exclusive dinner with Boxer and the president.

Given the political climate this year Boxer is expected to have the toughest election campaign of her political career. She won’t know until after the June 8 primary who she will be facing this fall. Her campaign estimates that the general election campaign spending could easily top $25 million.

The Federal Election Commission reports for the first three months of the year are due on Thursday. So far we’ve heard from Republican primary candidate former Rep. Tom Campbell, who has raised $1.6 million so far. Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiornia and Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore have yet to release their totals.

Obama To Raise Money For Barbara Boxer

    Evan McMorris-Santoro |
    April 12, 2010, 1:35PM

Sen. Barbara Boxer's (D-CA) reelection bid is getting a boost from President Obama next Monday. According to the the Boxer campaign, the President will appear at a fundraiser for Boxer in Los Angeles April 19. The visit comes as polls show Boxer could be in trouble in her bid for a fourth term.

Boxer is leading her Republican opponents in a general election matchup, but not by much. The TPM Poll Average for a race between former HP CEO Carly Fiorina and Boxer shows Boxer ahead by a slim margin of 46.0-42.1.

Against the front runner in the June 8 GOP primary race, former Rep. Tom Campbell, the TPM Poll Average shows Boxer's locked in a dead heat, with Boxer getting 43.7% the vote to Campbell's 43.3.

Today, Boxer's campaign announced it raised $2.4 million in the first quarter of 2010 and has just under $9 million cash on hand. Not a tiny sum, but she'll need more if she wants to beat back a challenge from the self-funder Fiorina and a state Republican party that will be able to pour millions into the race, assuming that another self-funder, former Ebay CEO Meg Whitman, continues her easy march to the gubernatorial nomination.

A big-dollar fundraiser with Obama could help fill Boxer's coffers. But more importantly, an appearance with Obama could help raise enthusiasm for her among Californians. A March 14 SurveyUSA poll showed Boxer with just a 40% job approval rating, with 50% saying they disapproved of the way she's doing her job.

The visit from Obama could serve to boost that number. Though he's faced declining poll numbers nationwide, Obama remains popular in California, a state he won easily in 2008. The TPM Poll Average shows Obama with a 57.4 approval rating in California.

This may be the first series of elections where the amount of money raised for campaigning won't determine the outcome.

I agree Judy the days of buying an election are coming to an end thanks to computers and the Tea Party movement.

This is why our political system does not respond to average Americans anymore. Thirteen million dollars is obscene!

$13 million for a U.S. Senate seat is nothing compared to the money Whitman is putting into her CA. Goveror race.

"Whitman has said she is prepared to spend $150 million" of her own money.

In 93 percent of House of Representatives races and 94 percent of Senate races that had been decided by mid-day Nov. 5, the candidate who spent the most money ended up winning, according to a post-election analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. The findings are based on candidates' spending through Oct. 15, as reported to the Federal Election Commission.

Continuing a trend seen election cycle after election cycle, the biggest spender was victorious in 397 of 426 decided House races and 30 of 32 settled Senate races.

On Election Day 2006, top spenders won 94 percent of House races and 73 percent of Senate races.

In 2004, 98 percent of House seats went to the biggest spender, as did 88 percent of Senate seats.

"The 2008 election will go down in U.S. history as an election of firsts, but this was far from the first time that money was overwhelmingly victorious on Election Day," Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, said. "The best-funded candidates won nine out of 10 contests, and all but a few members of Congress will be returning to Washington."

Ditto W! Elections in this country are bought and paid for and usually won by the candidate who can raise the most cash. Not only is it unspeakable, but almost guarantees that most candidates are going to be out of touch with the average working American.

We know that's certainly the case for the incumbent

YES! Obama, pleeese show up so you can screw this one up like you did Cokely's.

The more money these politicians put into thier elections, the more voters should avoid them. Whitmans prepared to spend $150 million? Obviously a stint in the gov's mansion will not make this money back. She's crooked and will get this money back in kickbacks one way or another.

    DON'T TRUST HER!
