Attorney General William Barr announced the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jeffrey Epstein's apparent suicide after he was found dead in his prison cell on Saturday.

The announcement comes as the FBI confirms its inquiry already underway.

But the FBI declined to comment on its impending investigation.

“I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody,” Barr said.

“Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered.”

According to the Bureau of Prisons statement which was released earlier on Saturday, Epstein was found “unresponsive in his cell” in the Special Housing Unit at around 6:30 a.m. after an “an apparent suicide.”

Officials said medical services were called lifesaving efforts were immediately undertaken.Epstein was brought to a local hospital but was pronounced dead.

The billionaire sex trafficker had reportedly hanged himself, and a gurney carrying Epstein's body was wheeled out of the Manhattan Correctional Center around 7:30 a.m. this morning, reports say.

A representative for the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examine said:

"There is no official cause of death yet" as "the medical examiner has to do their job."

"We are investigating the cause of death, and we have an open case," the representative added.

Although Epstein was placed on suicide watch, when he was found dead, he “was in his cell but was not on suicide watch at the time of his death.”

The news comes a day after unsealed documents revealed that alleged trafficking victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre named former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson along with Britain’s Prince Andrew among the elites who Jeffrey Epstein “farmed her out” to for sex.

Among the prince and Richardson, Giuffre listed Epstein attorney Alan Dershowitz, former Democratic Maine Sen. George Mitchell, and scientist Marvin Minsky, among others, according to the documents.

Giuffre claimed she was working at Mar-a-Lago as a spa attendant when she was 15 years old before being approached by Epstein’s assistant Ghislaine Maxwell.
