Three Arizona Police Officers Shot, Suspect Killed


PHOENIX -- Authorities say three police officers have been shot and wounded, and one suspect killed, during an undercover operation in suburban Phoenix.

At least one of the Chandler officers is reported to be seriously injured.

Investigators say one suspect died at the scene. Police have blocked off the area and are searching for another possible gunman.

Few details have been released, but video from television news helicopters showed the three police officers being taken out of a home on stretchers and transported to Phoenix hospitals.

The other officers' conditions weren't immediately available.

A Chandler police officer and two criminal suspects were killed in a shootout when an undercover operation went awry in south Phoenix on Wednesday evening.

Two other officers and two suspects were wounded. One of the officers was in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery Wednesday night.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said Chandler police were engaged in an undercover operation involving about a dozen officers, including members of the department's SWAT team, when shooting erupted inside a home in the 2300 block of West Maldonado Road.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, near South 23rd Avenue and Vineyard Road, around 6:45 p.m.

The initial shootout happened on Maldonado, authorities said, though paramedics picked up some wounded people at a nearby address on Darrel Road. Phoenix police said the incident had spilled out into the street.

The names of the dead were not available late Wednesday.

When paramedics arrived, two suspects were dead and three Chandler officers and two other suspects were suffering from gunshot wounds.

The officers were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, where one was pronounced dead a short time later. A second officer was in critical condition and the third in stable condition.

"It's bad enough when it's one (police officer shot)," Martos said. "It's like getting punched in the gut, like getting the air sucked out of you."

Police would not say where the wounded suspects were taken or what their conditions were.

Two other suspects detained at the scene were being questioned by Phoenix police.

Phoenix homicide detectives and Chandler internal-affairs investigators were expected to spend several hours reconstructing the scene to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.

As of 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, Chandler police had not released the names of the dead and wounded and had not issued any statements regarding the nature of the undercover operation or how the shootout developed.

No Phoenix police officers were involved in the operation, Martos said.

Dozens of Chandler police officers gathered at St. Joseph's to rally around the surviving officers.

My heart goes out to the Police Officers and their families. My disgust as always goes out to Obozo and Co. and now Susan Bolton.

I am so afreaid with them shooting down 1070 the criminals are going to take this as an open invitation. I fear things are going to get much worse LONG before they get better. The criminals will become even bolder yet...
