A former San Diego police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to providing inside information to drug traffickers about a criminal investigation.

Juan Hurtado Tapia, 39, of Imperial Beach, Calif., admitted in federal court that he used his position as an officer last year to run background checks and then provide them to drug traffickers.

He later lied to investigators about his activities, according to court records.

Tapia also admitted that he was attempting to impede the investigation of drug traffickers.

He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced July 20.
