Military court martials 'birther' officer who refused to deploy to Afghanistan

11:55 AM

The military has brought formal court martial charges against an Army doctor who failed to follow orders to deploy to Afghanistan because he believes President Barack Obama may not be a natural born citizen eligible to be commander-in-chief, Talking Points Memo reports.

TPM quotes Chuck Dasey, spokesman for Walter Reed Army Medical Center in
Washington, as saying that Lt. Col. Terrence Laikin was charged Thursday "with one specification of a violation of Article 87, Missing Movement and four specifications of a violation of Article 92 (three specifications of Failure to Obey a Lawful Order, and one Specification of Dereliction of Duty)."

Laikin released a video on YouTube last month explaining his decision not to report for a second tour in Afghanistan over the so-called "birther" issue, which questions the president's citizenship.

The 18-year Army vet, who has received the Combat Medical Badget and the Bronze Star, is chief of primary care and flight surgeon for the Pentagon's DiLorenzo Health Clinic, TPM notes.
