SUNLAND - A man shot his estranged wife Sunday and took off with their two young children, threatening to escape to Mexico, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 10:40 a.m. in the driveway of a home in the 10000 block of McBroom Street.

The woman, who was not identified, is in critical condition at a local hospital and is expected to survive, police said late Sunday night.

The father, Jose Luis Ortega, 26, and the woman got into an argument after she dropped the boys off at the house, said Los Angeles police Officer Julianne Sohn.

Ortega then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot the woman multiple times, Sohn said. He left the home with the two children, possibly headed to Mexico, she said. He also threatened to kill his ex-wife's family.

An Amber Alert has been issued for the two boys: Diego Fabian Ortega, 5, and Luis Gonzalo Ortega, 3, who were taken by their father in a black 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck. The license plate number is 7Z19738.

Diego was last seen wearing a blue and green checkered shirt, blue jeans and white shoes. Luis was last seen wearing a red checkered shirt and white shoes.

Ortega is described as Latino, with black hair, brown eyes, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 180 pounds and has a medium build and a light complexion.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Diego, Luis and Ortega can call 911.

Trevor Pikhart, 20, lives across the street from where the shooting occurred. He was about the brush his teeth Sunday morning when he heard gunshots, he said.

"All of a sudden we heard we four shots - boom, boom, boom, boom," he said, adding that the woman was shot while sitting in a car. There was a pause, then a few more shots.

Pikhart said his parents saw the alleged shooter washing his car earlier Sunday.

In this area north of Los Angeles, there's more than 50% chance this creep's an illegal alien. Is that racial profiling? Red emphasis added by me.

Ortega is an itinerant construction worker, police said, and should be considered armed.

Two boys abducted in Los Angeles found in Mexico

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A relative of the man accused of abducting his two young sons and shooting his estranged wife on Father's Day handed the children over to police near the U.S-Mexico border Tuesday as authorities continued searching for the suspect.

Jose Luis Ortega, 26, has been at large since Sunday, when he allegedly shot and wounded 22-year-old Rocio Ortega seven times when she dropped the boys off at his Sunland home north of Los Angeles.

The suspect apparently took Diego Fabian Ortega, 3, and Luis Gonzalo Ortega, 5, to the relative's home in Mexico sometime late Monday or early Tuesday, "said goodbye to them and took off," Capt. Joe Curreri said.

The relative called Ortega's father, who contacted detectives and went with them to the border to pick up the children, police said. Several hours later, they appeared with their grandfather at a news conference in front of a San Fernando Valley police station.

"The older boy told the relative that 'daddy killed mommy,' so they obviously observed" the shooting, Curreri told reporters. "I don't think they can comprehend the state she's in."

The relative said that the boys appeared hungry but otherwise unharmed when Ortega dropped them off, he said, adding that police believe he's hiding in Mexico.

The suspect's father pleaded for his son to turn himself in.

"Surrender yourself," Gonzalo Ortega said. "It's the best for everyone."

The children will be in protective custody and county social workers will evaluate whether their grandfather can care for and protect them from their father, who is considered armed and dangerous, Curreri said.

Their mother, who is hospitalized in serious condition, underwent more surgery Tuesday afternoon. Police will tell her the children are safe when she wakes up, he said.
