Cable News/MSM News ratings for April- Fox 100 months #1

April '10 Ratings: Fox News Hits 100 Months at #1
By Kevin Allocca on Apr 27, 2010 05:05 PM

Viewership was down across the board in cable news compared to last April, and Fox News was no exception.

Still, the competition has not be able to come close to the viewership Fox News has been drawing this year, or, for that matter, for the past 100 months, which is how long FNC has been #1 in cable news.

    FNC's raw numbers:

    Total day (Mon-Sun): 1.05M Total / 287K A25-54
    Prime (Mon-Sun): 1.92M Total / 485K A25-54

With this month's ratings, FNC marks 100 months as the most-watched cable news network, a streak begun in January 2002.

As Hal Boedeker in the Orlando Sentinel notes, Fox also had the top 9 programs in cable news. "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" cracked the top 10. Over the last two quarters, FNC had the top 13 programs in total viewers.

Meanwhile, Fox was down -19% in primetime total viewers and down -13% in the demo compared to last April, but still topped CNN, HLN, and MSNBC combined in total viewers during primetime. FNC was down double digits year-to-year in total day as well (-17% total viewers/-16% demo).

The network was also down month-to-month in total viewers and the demo in prime and total day. In the context of the big ratings streak the network has been on of late -- in Q1, Fox News had its best quarter ever in total day -- some leveling off might not come as a complete surprise.

"The O'Reilly Factor," "Glenn Beck," and "Hannity" were the top three programs, respectively in cable news. "O'Reilly" averaged 2.99M total viewers (765K demo), "Beck" averaged 2.12M total viewers (577K demo), and "Hannity" averaged 2.07M total viewers (537K demo).

April '10 Ratings: MSNBC's 'Countdown' Down Double Digits, but Crac...
By Kevin Allocca on Apr 27, 2010 04:44 PM

Like the other nets, MSNBC was down year-to-year, but there were a few surprises for the network. Raw numbers:

    Total day (Mon-Sun): 391K Total Viewers / 129K A25-54
    Prime (Mon-Sun): 785K Total Viewers / 239K A25-54

MSNBC saw the smallest decreases of any network in total viewers. Year-to-year, MSNBC is down -6% in total viewers for both total day and primetime.

MSNBC was #3 in total day/demo viewers behind FNC and HLN.

The channel was also #3 in total day/total viewers behind FNC and CNN. MSNBC topped CNN each hour between 6pm-12amET.

"Morning Joe" was the second most watched morning program in total viewers, but struggled in the demo averaging 115K, the fewest of the four.

Dylan Ratigan's 4pmET program was third in its timeslot though saw a small year-to-year increase in demo viewership.

"The Ed Show" was one of the few cable news programs to grow in both total viewers (+25%) and demo viewers (+4%) year-to-year and was the number two program in its time slot. Also, the 5pmET "Hardball" topped "The Situation Room" for the first time in total viewers.

Both "Countdown" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" were down in the demo year-to-year, but Maddow's program did grow slightly (+2%) in total viewers.

For the first time since 2000, MSNBC, which airs a replay of "Countdown," topped CNN at 10pmET in total viewers. MSNBC was also #2 in total viewers at 11pmET, which hasn't happened since Maddow's show premiered in 2008.

Though Olbermann's program saw year-to-year decreases (-13% total viewers/-30% demo), 8pm "Countdown" moved back into the cable news top 10, finishing 10th among cable news programs in total viewers. "Maddow" was #11.

April '10 Ratings: CNN Continues Year-to-Year Slide
By Kevin Allocca on Apr 27, 2010 04:31 PM

Though all four news nets were down, CNN continues to see the largest year-to-year decreases in viewership. The raw numbers:

    Total day (Mon-Sun): 413K Total / 123K A25-54
    Prime (Mon-Sun): 569K Total / 148K A25-54

CNN is down roughly -40% in primetime and -35% in total day for both total viewers and the demo. CNN also saw month-to-month decreases in both categories.

In the demo, CNN finished April in fourth in both primetime and total day. In total viewers, CNN fared a better, finishing #2 in total day and #3 in prime. CNN also again topped MSNBC in 9am-5pmET hours in total viewers and the demo.

"American Morning" finished #4 in total viewers, but topped MSNBC's "Morning Joe" in the demo. The 3pmET and 4pmET hours now occupied by "Rick's List" were down more than -40% compared to last April in both total viewers and the demo, yet CNN continues to best MSNBC in those time slots.

"John King, USA," which recently launched, is down -48% in total viewers (-52% demo) compared to the same time slot last year, which was occupied by "Lou Dobbs Tonight."

"Larry King Live," which was averaging over a million total viewers last April, was down to 671K this year. "AC360" again drew fewer viewers than replays "Countdown" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" in the demo, but also came in third in total viewers.

The last time MSNBC placed ahead of CNN at 10pmET in total viewers was July of 2000.

April '10 Ratings: HLN Chugs Along
By Kevin Allocca on Apr 27, 2010 04:15 PM

HLN, like the other cable nets, was down year-to-year in total viewers and the demo, but some programs made progress against the competition.

First, here are HLN's April '10 averages:

    Total day (Mon-Sun): 296K Total / 134K A25-54
    Prime (Mon-Sun): 512K Total / 166K A25-54

HLN was the only network to show demo growth -- though it was minimal -- compared to the Q1 averages.

HLN remained in fourth in total viewers for total day and primetime, but in the A25-54 demo, finished #2 in total day behind Fox News and #3 in prime behind FNC and MSNBC.

The only morning program to show growth was HLN's "Morning Express" which was up +9% in the demo. Behind FNC's dominant "Fox & Friends," "Morning Express" was again the second most viewed program in the demo (third, ahead of "American Morning," in total viewers).

Though it still trailed the competition on CNN, MSNBC, and FNC in total viewership, the only program to show significant year-to-year growth in primetime cable was "Joy Behar," which is up 31% in Total Viewers. "Behar" did eke out a win against CNN's "Larry King Live" in the demo, drawing 159K to King's 157K.

The 11pmET edition of "Showbiz Tonight" finished #2 in the demo ahead of the second hour of "AC360" and the replay of "Maddow."

Evening News Ratings: Week of April 19
By Kevin Allocca on Apr 27, 2010 12:27 PM
The evening newscasts last week appeared to continue the viewership trend from the week previous.

"NBC Nightly News" saw week-to-week decreases in viewership, but remained the number one evening news program. "ABC World News" and "CBS Evening News" each saw small week-to-week increases in total viewers, and the first place gap between ABC and NBC was the smallest it's been since last October.

Numbers for the week of Apr. 19:

    NBC ABC CBS
    • Total: 7,640,000 7,080,000 5,090,000
    • A25-54: 2,190,000 1,910,000 1,480,000

I'll tell you what I think. I think viewers are exercising their FREEDOM FROM THE PRESS, instead FREEDOM OF THE PRESS.

I am absolutely sick and tired of this pro-illegal name calling biased hype being SHOVED DOWN OUR THROATS over the Arizona law. This is the same onslaught rap, rap crap method they used during the Obama election.

I can't even watch my local NBCtv4 newscasts without being assaulted with propaganda so I just quit watching altogether. I feel like my television has been invaded just like my country. It will be a long time coming back to that station.

For national news, I'm watching FOX. They at least can present the other side.
