Im in SD county, but so far have been unaffected by the fires with the exception of school closure due to bad air quality. When the fires started my first thought was illegals.

Last I heard there was a mass exodus of 250,000 people that are evacuating!

We need to pray for these citizens. This is just unimaginable.

Evacuation centers are filling up and they are having to send people elsewhere.
I also heard they are evacuating a hospital.

Harris fire burning unchecked, heads for Otay Lakes and Chula Vista

The deadly Harris fire in southeastern San Diego County was burning unchecked and is headed toward Otay Lakes and eastern Chula Vista, fire officials warned Monday morning.

The fire, which started at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Harris Ranch Road near Potrero, was 5 percent contained as of 8 a.m. and has charred at least 20,000 acres.

Officials said the fire has killed one person and injured more than a dozen, including four firefighters and some illegal border crossers.

Tom Varshock was killed while trying to save his Potrero home, according to Jerry Johnson, a member of the Potrero planning group. Johnson said Varshock's 15-year-old son was burned over 50 percent of his body and is at the UCSD Medical Center.

Officials are discouraging non-essential travel in the East County. Highway 94 is closed from Otay Lakes Road to Forest Gate Road. Honey Springs Road nearby is also closed.

Interstate 8 East near Viejas casino closed to large trucks and other high-profile vehicles around 4 a.m. Monday. The CHP is diverting all traffic off the East Willows Road exit, pulling high-profile vehicles out of the line, then sending the other cars back onto the freeway.

More than 1,000 residences have been evacuated in the area, with several homes reported destroyed or damaged. Steele Canyon High School in Rancho San Diego and the Campo Community Center are serving as evacuation centers, but fire officials are now urging people to go to Santana High School in Santee as well.

More than 400 firefighers are on the scene, though battling the unpredictable fire is a challenge.
