FL: Police: Cheering Men Lead To 'Professional' Cockfighting

Police: Cheering Men Lead To 'Professional' Cockfighting Operation
Massive Grave Of Dead Birds, $25,000 In Cash Found

    UPDATED: 12:21 pm EDT July 24, 2007

Polk County, Fla. -- A large group of cheering men in a rural part of Polk County led to the arrests of 17 men on suspicion they were taking part in a cockfighting operation described as "very professional" by the county sheriff.

Officers raided a rural area of Polk County Monday and found a massive grave of freshly killed roosters, drawers full of sharp fighting spurs for birds and $25,000 in cash.

A bloody fighting box where the roosters apparently fought to the death was also found at the scene, police said.

"It was really, a very professional operation," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "They had a box, a fighting box, and they had benches set up on each side of the box and the benches were numbered. You sat on the bench in order to place your bets."

Deputies said a helicopter pilot in the area made the initial discovery after hearing men cheering in the woods.

When officers arrived, the group of men scattered.

Two of the 17 men captured and arrested were from Orlando; Oscar Herrara, 36, and Jose Herrara, 40, according to police. One of the men had a hat on that said "cockfighting."

Near the grave of rooster corpses, officers found seven badly scarred birds still alive. They were euthanized, the report said.

Police are trying to determine who large the cockfighting ring was in Polk County.

They said more arrests may be coming soon.

A lot of people raise these fighting roosters, but I have seen more and more of them being raised by the Mexicans. Sometimes you see the roosters around diaries, etc. The MExicans are raising them, but the corrupt owners have to know about it. Of course, these people are employing illegals, so what do you expect?

I know when I lived in Florida they were wanting to make it legal saying it was denying Hispanics their "culture". Fortunatly it was voted down. I don't know about anyone else but I find it disturbing that mutilation of animals is seen as a good sport. Why not have a ring and go back to the gladiators if brutality is so enjoyable to watch? What is the draw to suffering? Not to mention between that and dog fighting....obviously a lucrative "sport".

I don't know what the animal rights, touch feely, crowd are going to do when they start building bull rings in America.

They are already building rodeo arenas and while I have never been to a Mexican rodeo, I hear there are some pretty gruesome events in them - for the animals, I mean.

These people have not been 'in the shadows' for a couple of decades now. The only 'shadow' is the shadow of illegal activity by our government, the employers and the illegals themselves.

Trixie, I agree. It makes one wonder where PETA is on this issue?

Another example of the hypocrisy in these organizations.

It is kinda like the environmentalist that never utter a word about the devastation to the desert plants and the trashing of the area, yet are up in arms because the government wants to build a fence.
