LODI, Calif. -- A Department of Motor Vehicles employee is facing federal charges over allegations he issued a dozen fake California driver's licenses and identification cards.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says 35-year-old Denny Russell Gomes of Lodi was arrested Tuesday after being indicted by a federal grand jury last week on 12 counts of honest services mail fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Gomes worked at the DMV office in Stockton in 2007 and 2008. Federal prosecutors say during that period, he sometimes took money in exchange for substituting new photographs on existing DMV records, and for altering a person's recorded height, weight and address.

If convicted, Gomes is facing up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
